Zero to Hero

  • He said to him, 'O Lord,* how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.' Yahweh said to him, 'Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.' Judges 6:15 WEB

Gideon was the least in his family who was the poorest clan in Manasseh. God chose him to lead a group of three hundred men and defeat a vast Midianite army whose camels could not even be counted.

Gideon was scared and hopelessly outnumbered. Outside of God, he had nothing going for him. No one else thought so either. His hometown wanted to kill him for destroying baal's altar. Gideon was the least of the least. Yet with only God on his side, it was more than enough.

When the battle started, the enemies became confused and started killing each other, then ran away. They were completely defeated. After the battle, there were forty years of peace. Gideon, with the help of God, made it happen. God likes to show His power strong in the weak and humble.

Moses was the meekest man on the earth during his life (Num 12:3), David was the least of his family (1 Sam 16:11). Even Jesus was born in a stable (Luke 2:7). Yet they were world changers.

As a child, I was the youngest of thirteen children and not even one of them, for I was a step child from a previous marriage. On top of that my mom told me that I was not exactly 'his' either. Nevertheless, God has shown me that it is not who you are born as, but who you live for that matters.

God can fix everything, and if all that you have is Him, He is more than enough. He has taken me from sweeping the floor to the manager in a few months. There have been times when I was out of work and flat broke, I would open my Bible and find that someone had secretly put money in it. I have seen the sick and hurting be instantly healed. I have watched Him take life crushing situations and turn it completely around for our good. Things that would make you pinch yourself to be sure that you are awake.

Today you may be the least of the family and feel the weakest, but God can make a hero out of a zero. If you follow His leading, no thing or no one can hold you back. He is more than enough. So we can confidently say, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?' (Hebrews 13:5).

Prayer: Father, my life is Yours. Lead me into all that You have for me. Provide for me in the desert and lead me out the other side for I choose to put my trust in You. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Diane Caseyedited: April 22, 2016 It's messages like these that help to build up my self esteem. I'm 66 yo, been in the ministry for several years, and that is still one of the things I battle with. just recently I have asked God to instill within me holy confidence and boldness to continue preaching his word. thanks for these encouraging and uplifting devotionals, I know the Holy Spirit inspires you.

Rhonda Teem
Rhonda Teem Same with me, Diane. I have been reading Jesus Calling and journalling after, for about a month, give or take a day or two. Along with RHM devotionals, this book is also helping me. It IS helping my self-esteem. I am the "black sheep" in my family, but I know I am EVERYTHING to God. I have had a real negative outlook on life, and have hated myself so bad, that a psychologist said that he had never seen anyone hate themselves so bad, and saw themselves in the worst possible light. I have been trying to figure out why I feel that way. And I have answers now. I don't feel that way so much now. I am a work in progress, as we ALL are, as Children of the Most High. To say I love myself, well, that is a little difficult to say with honesty. But, I know that I will find the love I have for myself eventually. I know it's there. I have seen a lot of things that I should feel, have, buried under dirt. Almost as if each of those things I should feel for myself, are buried in a grave. But it's not an eternal grave, so I know that I am digging my way to free them. (I hope that makes sense... sometimes, what I say is really out there, but I have nothing to fear by saying these things, and I know what I mean lolol). Maybe this is what has happened to you.  I have realized that it takes self-discipline by ignoring the mutter from the enemy, and that mutter is ALL lies. There is a LOT more I can say, but, I don't wanna bore ya too bad. lol. Just know, that you have made a difference for people. God chose you specifically to make a difference in this world. You have a good, sweet heart. This is how God created you. Just remember: God is the ONLY One that matters. His opinion of you is GOOD, and He LOVES you. This is something that I have also been realizing, and it is helping me immensely. GOD is helping me immensely. You are loved, Miss Diane <3

Nancy Cavataio Karen, I work with babies with delays, some of them with Down's Syndrome. I pray God will heal his little heart, and he will be healthy. If you haven't had any experience with Down's, you and your family will be amazed at what a blessing they are! This little child is going to change you all, in a good way. God bless you and your family in this new journey.
