When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It's a ghost!" and they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Cheer up! It is I! Don't be afraid." Peter answered him and said, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters." He said, "Come!" Peter stepped down from the boat and walked on the waters to come to Jesus. Matthew 14:26–29 WEB.
Waves splashed against the side of the boat. The light of the moon shone across the surface of the water. Peter and the other disciples nervously watched a figure walking towards them in the night. They thought it was a ghost, for it walked across the water, but it was Jesus coming to meet them.
The Apostle Peter, ever quick to speak, answered Jesus and asked if He could join Him out there. Jesus said, "Come!" So Peter stood in the boat and looked at the water's surface, but nothing was there to be seen. There was no magic walkway appearing. There was just deep water, and Jesus was standing out there on it.
All of Peter's common sense and years of experience as a fisherman told him if you step out there, you'll drown. The other disciples in the boat knew it as well. Everyone with common sense knew better than to try to walk on water.
Now the natural man doesn't receive the things of God's Spirit, for they are foolishness to him; and he can't know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Corinthians 2:14 WEB).
Peter pushed these thoughts out of his mind and took a tentative step out of the boat. Before his foot touched the water, the molecules became solid beneath him. Though Peter could see nothing there in the natural, the water supported him when he stepped out in faith.
Obeying the Lord, even when it looks impossible, is living faith. Our natural minds cannot understand matters of faith, for they are spiritually discerned. Once you say, "I can't do that," you have just prophesied your future.
All the heroes of the Bible spoke positively and in faith. Joshua commanded the sun to stand still (Joshua 10:12), and it did. Elijah prayed for it not to rain, and it didn't rain for three and a half years (James 5:17). David told Goliath he would strike him down and then did so (1 Samuel 17:46).
We are to work together with God to accomplish His will on the earth. He may ask us to do things that we don't have the means to do. At that point, He will provide whatever is needed, though we may see nothing there, for it will appear right before your foot hits the water.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, please help me see the unseen. Teach me to put my trust in You and to be spiritually discerning. I want to be a part of what You are doing today. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
Note: Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:12-13) ~ If you have a prayer need, we are here for you!
