Backs To The Wall

  • Moses said to the people, "Don't be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh, which he will work for you today: for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you shall never see them again. Yahweh will fight for you, and you shall be still." Exodus 14:13'14 WEB.

Standing by the Red Sea with their back to the water, a group of unarmed former slaves stared out at the most powerful army in the world at that time, the Egyptians. Their enemy was equipped with the latest weaponry and rode in heavily armored chariots. While the Israelites were on foot, carrying their children and the little they owned with them. It looked like a one-sided battle in favor of the Egyptians.

The Egyptian army had to be a terrifying sight for the Israelite families. But as they stood on that shore, Moses told them: "Fear not, stand firm. The army that you see here today, you will never see again."

Then Moses raised his arms, and the Red Sea parted. The Israelites crossed over on the dry seabed. When the Egyptian army followed them in, the wheels came off their chariots and bogged them down in the sand. When all the Israelites were safely on the other side, the water closed over the Egyptian army. That was the last time the Israelites saw them. When they needed it most, God came through for them. It was a one-sided battle in favor of the Israelites.

Once upon a time, our computer business dried entirely up. After several months of frantically seeking work, our finances ran out, and our credit card maxed out. Eventually, the week came when we had to move out of our home. We were trying to decide what to take with us and what to sell. That Tuesday morning, I went into my room and sat down on a bean bag in the corner where I usually prayed.

I no longer had the strength to pray anymore, and I was all out of tears. Those days, I just kind of sat there in the quiet to gather my thoughts. Over the past few months, I had been trying to seek the Lord with my whole heart, laying on the floor in prayer, soaking, fasting, giving, but yet things grew worse each day. I felt like the Lord had abandoned me, and I was alone.

When I sat down that morning, without saying a word, the Lord gave me an open vision. It looked like a movie screen appeared before my eyes, and I watched as a scene played out on it. In the vision, I saw myself climbing into a boxing ring and putting on the gloves. The Lord was behind me, standing outside the ring like a coach. He said: "You are not alone, for I am in your corner, and I have prepared you for this day! Now get in there and fight!"

By the end of the week, I was a pastor. Then a friend suddenly stepped in and paid all of our bills for the month. Almost overnight, everything had changed for us. It was a "pinch yourself to be sure you are awake" moment. When we needed it the most, God came through for us.

When your back is to the wall, trust God. He is more than enough. Though it is eleven-fifty-nine on the clock, He will still come through. Later, when you are looking back, this will be a part of your testimony. It may be rough for a while, but you will be stronger when you come out the other side. Your faith is tested by staring directly into the face of fear with no one to help you but God.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I know that You have got my back. Nothing happens to me without You knowing it. I don't understand a lot of things, but I choose to trust in You. Please deliver me from my enemies, Lord, and set me free from my chains. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
