A Voice From The Past

  • Eli perceived that Yahweh had called the child. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, 'Go, lie down. It shall be, if he calls you, that you shall say, 'Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears.' ' So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Yahweh came, and stood, and called as at other times, 'Samuel! Samuel!' Then Samuel said, 'Speak; for your servant hears.' 1 Samuel 3:8-10 WEB

Samuel was a young boy, lying down in his bed, when God called his name. He got up and ran to his elder, Eli. Waking the man, Samuel said, 'Here I am' for he thought it was Eli who had called him. The Lord called to Samuel three times. Each time, he did the same thing, waking Eli with "Here I am".

Eli, after being disturbed for the third time, told Samuel to go lie back down. He instructed the boy to say: 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.', if He called again. Samuel did so, and the Lord told him many things that were soon going to change in Israel.

Samuel thought that the voice of the Lord was that of Eli, his mentor. In my own life I have often found that the Lord will speak to me through a familiar voice. It may be something that a mentor or a pastor once said to me, a teaching, or a song that comes back to my remembrance. It is sometimes easy to miss that it is actually the Lord speaking until things start to change. You may feel that you are just remembering something. When looking back, it was easy to see that it was indeed Him.

'But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.' (John 14:26).

When going about your day, be sensitive to the Spirit and listen for that small 'familiar' voice. We have all heard it, but most do not recognize Him. That voice that is nudging you to do the right thing, that is the one. It just may be that the Lord wants to tell you some things, and a timely word from the Holy Spirit changes everything.

Prayer: Father, speak to me in a way that I understand and teach to know when it is You. I really want to know Your voice and to follow You closer. I want to walk with You, and talk with You today. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Kath Paro Dion~ Thank you for your message this morning.  All I can think is that yes He is speaking to me and I am hearing Him.  I just need to work harder on speaking His words.  Voice my feelings, thoughts and needs in a way that can be heard.  I need to be heard and my Higher Power is saying no longer cower to others.  You are just as important and they are.  It is scary but He will be holding me close as I strive out in this new Kath.  I grow in the light of the spirit of the Lord!  Amen.

Twila Stierwalt
Twila Stierwalt Amen, pastor Dion. This has happened to me so many times. I usually have my devotions first thing in the morning, before I start on other things. last week God kept putting in to my mind to turn on my computer and go to face book at that moment. I did and one of my friends posted that she needed prayer. I prayed for her and sent her a encouraging note. also have had this happen to go get a card and send it to a specifice person, if I don't stop right then and do it then I forget about it. I pray that I will know that it is God nudgging me to do these things.

Mike OBryan
Mike OBryan           Good Morning!!!!           Wow! What a reading!!!~  This reading rings ever so true for Me!! I went through some thing like this! This second I don't know what He wants Me too share. I know what ever it is will be off the Chain!! I come from a huge Family! 8 kids!! Michigan!! We started out on the West Coast and ended up 30 miles North West Of Detroit!! My story begins, being feed in a High Chair in the living room next to a oil stove! Lots of big storms in Michigan!! To the point the living room door was open! Ma was in other room! A lighting bolt desides too come through the front door, and hitting the stove next to Me!! In brief for now, I was unhurt physicially, mentally I was rocked very deep!! Deep into the Arms of God!! In the coming year when storms came I would climb out of My crib and crawl on the florr to my parents bed!! I recall going to a fire works show, ending up clinging to Moms leg in terror!! About a year of this, a Loving Sister sepped in and took Me aside! She said if I have Faith in God and face the lightning I would get past my fear of it!! She said to stand in front of the living room window the next time a storm came! In a day or so another big storm came! I did as she said. Big boom lightning I thought it was pretty.. Immediately I was past the fear of it!!  Point some time later I started hearing a Voice in My head in My voice-yep!! I knew it was good-instantly!!  I never told any one!! So My story is one of a special nature indeed! My to be revealed!!!!!

Joseph Adams, Jr.
Joseph Adams, Jr. Hello Mike, I'm from Michigan also and yes we get some crazy weather. I remember as a little boy, I was sitting on our front porch and it rained on our side of the street, but across the street from where I was sitting it was not raining. As a little boy, I thought it to be very strange and to this day, I have yet to figgure out what God was saying or doing?

Carol Pady
Carol Pady Amen. Sometimes He speaks to me by a bible verse that keeps appearing in devotions. Sometimes He speaks to my heart and leads me to do something, such as call someone, or pray for someone. Sometimes He just tells me that he is with me in all things. I hear Him loudest when I am about to stumble. Then I not only hear that small still voice but I feel the conviction. I have learned that He speaks in many ways. I have learned through failure to always listen!
