The king talked with them; and among them all was found no one like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore stood they before the king. In every matter of wisdom and understanding concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchante...

If you died with Christ from the elements of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to ordinances, "Don't handle, nor taste, nor touch" (all of which perish with use), according to the precepts and doctrines of men? These things indeed appear like wisdom in self-imp...

Double Trouble

  • Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him. Job 2:11 WEB

Righteous men have always been hard to find. Yes, under the new covenant we have forgiveness and our sins are covered by the blood of Jesus after we have accepted Him as our Lord, but it was not always like that. Thank God that we live in a time of grace.

God would have spared Jerusalem if He could have found a single righteous person living there (Jer. 5:1). He told Abraham that He would spare Sodom if he could find ten, but He could not (Gen. 18:32).

Job was a righteous man. God Himself pointed it out and praised Job: 'Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?' (Job 1:8).

The cynical satan could not believe that it was true. Was there really a man that walked the straight and narrow, that could not be bribed, that did not hide dark secrets. If there was, he had never met them.

Cynicism: A studied disbelief. An inclination to believe that people are motivated purely by self interest. Cynics begin to look inward at their own malice and believe that everyone else, is just like them. The devil believed that everyone else was just like him, because most of them were. After a dispute over Job's righteousness, God allowed Job to be tested by satan, proven, to see if he actually measured up.

Job soon went through a terrible trial. Though he was the wealthiest in the land, he lost it all In one day. Different bands of raiders took his 500 yoke of oxen, 500 donkeys, 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, and killed his servants. A strong wind blew the house down on top of his ten children and killed them. He lost his seven sons and his three daughters.

Job fell down on the ground and worshipped God saying: 'Naked I came into this world, and naked I will leave it. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord' (Job 1:21). In all of this, Job did not sin.

Three of his friends came to comfort him and one by one they gave long-winded speeches, explaining that Job was suffering because of the sin in his life. They believed that Job was living under God's judgment, when really God was proud of Job. In Job 42:7, God showed up in a whirlwind and set things straight.

'And the LORD restored the fortunes of Job, when he had prayed for his friends. And the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before' (Job 42:10).

Job came out of the test with double everything: 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. He also had seven more sons and three more daughters.' (Job 42:12). His children were doubled as well for the first were not gone, but living safely with the Lord. What a strange way to bless someone. Job went through trouble, then everything that he had was doubled.

When Jesus said it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven, the disciples asked who then can be saved? It was thought that wealth and blessing were God's stamp of approval. While it is safe to say that a good life can stem from good choices, and a bad life can be a result of bad choices, many bad circumstances have nothing to do with the choices that were made. Saint Paul was considered a righteous man that wrote a lot of the New Testament, yet he wrote:

'Are they servants of Christ? (I speak as one beside himself.) I am more so: in labors more abundantly, in prisons more abundantly, in stripes above measure, and in deaths often. Five times I received forty stripes minus one from the Jews. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I suffered shipwreck. I have been a night and a day in the deep. I have been in travels often, perils of rivers, perils of robbers, perils from my countrymen, perils from the Gentiles, perils in the city, perils in the wilderness, perils in the sea, perils among false brothers; in labor and travail, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, and in cold and nakedness. (2 Corinthians 11:25).

I know some really good people who are going through some really bad times. Today remember that if things are going great for you that it is not necessarily a sign of God's approval, and if things are going awful for you it is not necessarily a sign of God's judgement. Stay the course for you can be right in the middle of God's will and in the worst trial of your life.

God was proud of Job and his hellish circumstances came because he did something right, not as a form of discipline or correction. They say that God gives His toughest battles to His strongest warriors. What if the personal hell that you are living through is because you were actually doing something right. What if God is not punishing you, but is instead proud of you. Realize that it is only a test and be on your best behavior.

Prayer: Father, I thank You for everything that You have done for me. I know that life is not about me, but about You. Naked I came into this world, and naked I will leave it. Help me to see the big picture while I am here and get my eyes off of my own problems. Forgive me of my sins and lead me into all that You have for me, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Tracy Carroll After reading this, I'm a little more confused about my life?? Right now and for the last several months my life has been pretty good (of course some small bumps). But, now I'm thinking that my life might go back to what it was,,, a daily struggle for peace of mind, one problem after the next, and much termoil. How am I to know what's what? I 'feel' like I'm doing right; but am I? God bless

Dion Todd Tracy, Job's life overall was very good. He just went through one long dark patch and had to rebuild from it, though it was not his fault. I started life over with nothing at 35, but you would not know that today unless I told you. Take the peaceful path and fight to keep it that way. You never need to return to the past. You are better, wiser, stronger, and with Jesus on your side, you can make this work. The devotional just means that going through hard times does not mean that God is mad at you.  :)

Twila Stierwalt
Twila Stierwalt God does not want us to live in our past, He wants us to live a day at a time. I have learned that I can have Gods peace in my life during very hard times, God wants you to have peace especially during hard times, He wants you to react the right way during the hardest of times, and He will give you the power to do that.

David and Dianna Wyles
David and Dianna Wyles It sure can feel like disapproval from God when you are in the middle of a trial! But I love how the story of Job reminds us things aren't always as they seem. It feels like our family has been going through hell's trials for some time now, but through all the struggle I have seen SOOO many blessings as well! No one can ever convince me that it wasn't God holding and blessing us through the worst of messes turned to messages. My daughter is well and getting ready to move out on her own again after recovering from a major mental illness that left us all helplessly watching and praying. These days she helps me overcome some of my anxieties and is strong and confident once again. Her journey back to whole health and wellness is a God-send and lesson to us all. We learned so much through it that I can only thank God for the healing, the lessons and my daughter's sanity!  During her illness we lost her aunt to cancer, fast forward 6 or 8 months and I walked away from a 17 year career to be free from a hostile environment and while it has been both a blessing and anxiety charged, I know it was God calling me to peace and his will. The last six months have been a time of healing and reflection. WE have struggled but the Lord has been providing for us the whole way through. WE are behind on rent and any other Landlord would have put us out but the Lord has kept us here and softened the heart of our Landlord. I can only praise God's goodness for seeing my torment and releasing me from a space that no longer was mine. He is guiding us to where he wants us and providing all the way. Yes! Our Father in heaven Knows our needs and provides. I wanted a garden this year but really could not afford to buy all the seeds, plants and dirt... I have been gifted all I need for my garden and then some! The Lord know our needs and he provides! I wanted to share my heart blessings with the world... he has set me up pretty good to do that! He brought me here to RHM, where I share my photos world wide and have learned a great deal about self-publishing through our wonderful Pastor, his lovely wife, and a few other inspiring members who have encouraged me all the way, to step out in faith and publish my own book! It's in the works and would not be possible without God guiding me and all the encouraging people he has sent my way.  I may not yet have a job but I see good things on the horizon again and it doesnt all feel like a curse anymore but abundant blessings through trying times. Thank you Pastor and First lady Sylvia ;) Your light shines bright and blesses us all. God Bless   Pastor's  Prayer: Father, I thank You for everything that You have done for me. I know that life is not about me, but about You. Naked I came into this world, and naked I will leave it. Help me to see the big picture while I am here and get my eyes off of my own problems. Forgive me of my sins and lead me into all that You have for me, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Carol Pady
Carol Pady Amen. Sometimes as He refines us we go through tremendous trials, trials that shatter our emotions and make us want to raise our hands and say " God where are You?, Do You still care for Us?." If we stand strong and do not shrink back from our prayer, fasting and worship, He proves through answered prayers and blessings that He never left us and that He will not forsake us, that He deeply cares and perfectly loves us.

Rick Doran My Wife and I are going through a nasty season of pain and suffering.  God is good, I have learned humility that comes from loss, and being completely dependent on others for basic needs. Our Church Family has been so caring and Loving. God is so Good, all the time. our Marriage is stronger after 24 years, and our faith is stronger. God is Good.
