Damaged Goods

  • Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, 'This man, if he were a prophet, would have perceived who and what kind of woman this is who touches him, that she is a sinner.' Jesus answered him, 'Simon, I have something to tell you.' He said, 'Teacher, say on.' 'A certain lender had two debtors. The one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they couldn't pay, he forgave them both. Which of them therefore will love him most?' Simon answered, 'He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the most.' He said to him, 'You have judged correctly.' Luke 7:39 WEB

The woman wept at the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair, while the religious man looked on in pure disdain. He was shocked that Jesus would allow such a person to touch even His feet. "Touch me not" was a big thing to religious people at the time. Those that were sinners, unclean or diseased were put out of the social circle. Jesus touched them and allowed them to touch Him.

While the Pharisee thought these things, Jesus told him the parable about two people that owed a certain money lender, one five hundred and the other fifty. Neither could pay it so he forgave them both their debt.

Then Jesus asked, which of them would love him more? The one who had the greater debt forgiven was the answer. Then Jesus went on to tell the religious man that this lost person that strayed from the path of virtue, loved God more than he ever did. Wow. What a stark comparison of the warm heart of God towards the lost sinner, and the coldness of a religious actor towards the same person.

People often go by His name, but do not carry His loving nature. God loves sinners and welcomes them with open arms. Do not let organized religion turn you away from getting to know Him yourself. Also, do not let the things that you have been through make you feel unworthy of His love.

God can handle damaged goods. He was there when the damage took place, and you will never know how much He loves you until you surrender your heart to Him and let Him heal it. He can put your life back together again, where others have only broken it.

Prayer: Father please bring healing to me life. Heal my emotions, balance my mood swings, make me stable in You. Repair the damage Lord, I look to You. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Jim Jarrelledited: September 12, 2015 Hello Dianna, Jesus said in Matthew 6:33; Seek first the kingdom of God and His rightesness, and all these things will be added to you. I suggest to you that you start asking God what that really means in your life, and let Him change you as He sees fit. God is so awesome the He will take His time to make those changes for you if you let Him!

Jim Jarrell What is it that makes men think they are better than the next man? I see this so often, and it just makes me wonder. Jesus said in John 17 that He prayed that we all become one in order to show the world that the Father had sent Him. We still have so far to go. If you could only know how prophetic this word truly is in my life today!

Justin Strus
Justin Strus This really hits home with me. Knowing about my past and knowing I've been forgiven, set free, washed clean by His blood is an amazing things. Words can't express it. The only thing I know to do is to pick up my cross daily and allow Him complete control. Keep this in mind: our "history" is really "His story" God bless everyone :)

Kathy Banfield
Kathy Banfield This reminds me of working as an RN in the mid 80s when AIDS was just starting to rear it's ugly head. The affected patients were kept in Isolation and we had to don gowns and gloves and masks before rendering care. They seldom had any visitors. I recall the day I touched an AIDS victum and my co-workers thought I was insane. But here I am, more than 30 years later. I am not HIV positive, and I believe I made a difference in that poor young man's life.

Deleted Member Amen, being broken can surely make you humble and let God then begin to mold you to be what He wants us to be. He loves us so much, that He will pick up the broken pieces of our lives and put them all back together in the right place, to be used for His Glory and purpose. God is so good.

Cheryl Hepler
Cheryl Hepler I love these stories/parables Jesus teaches.  Sooo down to earth.  I love real.   I think of Christian title today, Acts is where Christ followers received the name Christian.  There are many Christians today yet how many are Christ followers?  About an 1 hour or more the Pope visits Philly.  The Holy Father as is his title.  There is only one Holy a Father & He sit s in Heaven.  Truly over the Pope.  It is the church teaching not the Bible teachings.  I believe God loves the Pope.  Thank Pastor Dion teachings that keep us real!

Deanne Rascas Around 10 yrs. ago, I too felt like damaged goods! I was fighting a losing battle with an addiction until I turned to the Lord and laid it at his feet. God is so faithful! I started to beat my addiction as soon as I gave it over to him and I remain free from the bondages of Satan to this day! Thank you Father! And thank you Pastor Dion for pointing me in the right direction every morning!
