All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, "We wish that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that we had died in this wilderness! Why does Yahweh bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be captured or killed! Wouldn't it be better for us to return into Egypt?" They said to one another, "Let's choose a leader, and let's return into Egypt." Numbers 14:2–4 WEB.
The Israelites were standing on the border of the land God had promised to give them. He had done great signs and wonders in their lives. He had delivered them from their slavery in Egypt. Now, when so close to a major breakthrough, they stubbornly refused to take the next step.
They wanted to kill Moses, appoint a new leader, and return to their slavery in Egypt. They would do anything except what God asked them to do, but now they had reached the end of the line and would go no further. All but Joshua and Caleb died there in the wilderness. Then, the Lord took their children into the land.
I have seen many people get stalled in life because they couldn't take that next step. While standing on the border of their own promised land, they were too terrified or stubborn to do what God asked them. So they just sat there and slowly died.
Some of us should have left that place fifteen years ago, but we couldn't let go. Some Pastors in churches should have moved on years ago, but they sit there fossilized. God had something better, but He will not make you obey Him. When you know what to do but refuse to take the next step, He will let you die off and use your children.
You can break the cycle. Choose to obey the Lord's prompting. It's for your own good. Though it looks short-term scary, it will have long-term benefits. So pray hard and take the risk. If you feel you have been left behind and are no longer where you should be, repent, get back up, and take the next step. God will restore you and put you back on track.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, please give me the grace to follow you wherever you call me. Help me face any obstacle and stay in step with You. Let me be the one who enters the promised land and never retreats. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
