The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth. Then Paul said to him, "God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?" Acts 23:2–3 WEB.
Jesus faced His crucifixion without complaining or opening His mouth, but when they slapped the Apostle Paul, he opened his. Later, Paul learned to turn the other cheek and be content in whatever circumstance he found himself in (Philippians 4:11). This was a growth process for him. It took time and occasionally being slapped.
Each of us has our "buttons." Something that someone does that can really set us off. We often say, "I can't help it!" But really, it's just a weakness inside of us, a flaw in our character. It's like a handle on a pot or a remote control for a television.
By pressing your button at the right time, people can manipulate you. They can get you into trouble. To say stupid things that you regret later and do something that you wouldn't normally do. It's as if they have a remote control for your body, with buttons on it named anger, guilt, shame, and so many others—different buttons that manipulate your behavior.
Pray, grit your teeth, think happy thoughts, and let those feelings die within you. It will become easier each time. If you submit to God and resist the devil, it will flee from you (James 4:7). Eventually, the enemy's remote control will cease to work in your life. I have several buttons that no longer work when people press them, though some still do. It was a big remote.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, please help me see the traps set before me and control my emotions while under pressure. Set a guard over my lips and help me think before I speak. I want my life to be pleasing to You. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
Note: Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:12-13) ~ If you have a prayer need, we are here for you! I had to laugh when I read, "It was a big remote." I think we all have big remotes that God has to work on. Like you, I no longer have buttons that work, but still need work done on others.
As I submit to Him when I'm feeling emotions rising within me, I do like you say, pray, grit my teeth, and He reminds me to guard my mouth. It's been a lifetime of learning, and I still have a ways to go, but it's been worth it, especially in my marriage. God is good!
