Isaac entreated Yahweh for his wife, because she was barren. Yahweh was entreated by him, and Rebekah his wife conceived. Genesis 25:21 WEBRebekah was barren and could not have children, but when her husband Isaac prayed for her, she became pregnant with twins. If you read the details, Isaac was for...

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed. Mark 1:34 NIVIt was early in the morning as I walked into my little prayer room. After praying for a few minutes I sat in the quiet solitude, mostly wondering how we we...

Then he began to denounce the cities in which most of his mighty works had been done, because they didn't repent. 'Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. Bu...

Wearing Out the Saints

  • RHM Devotional: Wearing Out the Saints from Refreshing Hope Ministries on Vimeo.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12 ESV

Today I want to talk about spiritual warfare, and what to do when we are tired. I am not talking about physically tired, but spiritually and mentally exhausted. Paul wrote that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but many in the church today believe “we do not wrestle at all.” They don’t know that they have been wrestling all their lives. What Paul meant is that our true enemies are in the spirit realm, behind the scenes. You cannot see them, but like the wind, you experience their presence. The warfare that is going on in the heavenly realms, is being acted out on earth among human beings like us daily.

Who is the enemy, what are they, and what do they want? As I understand it, there are three heavens with inhabitants in each one. In 2 Corinthians 12:2, Paul wrote of a man caught up to the third heaven where the throne of God sits. If there is a third heaven, then there has to be a first and a second. The first heaven is the sky and air above us. The second is beyond that, and the third beyond that one. Whether two and three can actually be seen with the natural eye, I don’t know. As far as I know, there is no Seventh Heaven, nor a Cloud Nine mentioned in scripture.

satan, lucifer, the angel of light, was a created being, an archangel that lived in the third heaven. According to Isaiah 14:12, he tried to lead a rebellion in heaven to overthrow God, and he had one third of the angels on his side, but he got his butt kicked good and was tossed out. Now he lives between the third heaven and the earth where we live. In Ephesians 2:2 satan is called: “the ruler of the kingdom of the air.” This is probably referring to the second heaven, though he visits the first as well, as he appeared to Jesus in the wilderness.

In Daniel 10:12, Daniel had fasted and prayed for 21 days when an Man appeared to him. This was quite possibly Jesus Christ, because the Man has almost the same description that John wrote about in Revelation 1:13. They both were slain in the spirit, and helped up by a Man with a golden sash, and feet like bronze.

This “Man” told Daniel that from the first day of his fast, that his words were heard, but that the prince of Persia, an evil angel, had withstood him 21 days. Then Michael, an Archangel, came to help Him break through their lines.

How is this possible, that the kingdom of darkness can stand in the way of the Kingdom of God? We don’t know; how did Jacob wrestle with God all night and prevail? Because apparently God allowed him to. So there is a spiritual battle going on around us, and above us, and it has raged for thousands of years. This age-old conflict can have significant effects on us.

    Daniel 7:25 (Speaking of the 4th Beast): “He shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and shall think to change the times and the law;

The Aramaic word for “wear out” or “persecute” here literally means to “wear out the mind.” They wear you down mentally, until you want to curl up in a ball and quit. The enemy does not concentrate so much on your heart, or on the emotions, or on personal holiness, or on the fruit of the Spirit, but rather he attacks the mind. Our battle is often won, or lost in our thought life. Do you ever feel “overwhelmed”?

The way to overcome is to have our mind renewed, refreshed by the Holy Spirit as Paul wrote in Romans 12:2 (ESV): “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”

In Philippians 4:8-9 (ESV) Paul wrote: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things…

Paul is saying “think on good things and the peace of God will be with you.” What we feed in our thought life will grow, and what we starve will die.

When dealing or witnessing to people who are “living under the influence” like this, here are some helpful notes:

    1. Don’t get sidetracked: Keep the main thing, the main thing. The evil spirit influencing them would love to weaken you by consuming your time and energy on meaningless disagreements.

    2. Engage in warfare: Pray, for we do wrestle. Keep in mind that the battle is a spiritual battle, because behind it all, evil spirits are trying to disrupt God’s plans. Paul wrote: “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God” and “bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:4–5). We use our spiritual authority through the blood of Christ to bind the spirit which is trying to influence others with wrong thoughts.

    3. Be nice: Show your opponents honor and respect. Keep in mind that the people who come against you are not your enemies. Your real enemy is the spirit influencing them, and it is simply using willing individuals to accomplish its desires. You can pray this with me if you like:

Prayer: Heavenly Father, please speak to me in a way that I understand. Guide me, for I am nothing without You. Strengthen me and refresh my spirit. Help me learn spiritual survival skills, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.

These need to be part of my "spirtitual morning workout" every day. Thank you, Pastor Dion, for reminding me that people are not the enemy--the spiritual forces influencing them are the real problem.

Hi, DIon, it is good that you are teaching this.  Most churches do not teach on spiritual warfare.
