The Way to the Top

  • The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Matt 23:11 ESV

When I showed up at a church work day event, the job they assigned to me was scrubbing all the bathrooms: upstairs, downstairs, and down the hall. I did not remember the church having that many bathrooms. Though I was tempted to complain that they were underutilizing my skills, I sensed that the Lord had set me up. I set my heart to give those bathrooms the best cleaning job they ever had. The walls, floor, mirrors, and doors all shined when I was done with them.

After a few weeks, a door opened up for me and the Lord used me to minister to others. C.S. Lewis once said 'Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.' I have been on both sides of this fence. Once as a child I thought very little of myself and wished that I could have been someone else. Later, as a man, I gravitated towards thinking a lot of myself.

God is faithful and tries to keep me balanced in this with little blessings like the one above. If you find yourself in a humbling situation, thank God that He has taken notice of you, and He may be preparing you for something bigger. The lower you go the higher He can take you! The way to the top is through humility.

Prayer: Father, please keep me balanced. Reveal areas of pride in my life and give me the grace to get rid of it, in the name of Jesus.

I would like to share with everyone a simple daily prayer I have added, " Abba Father keep my feet rooted on the straight and narrow path that leads to You. " I pray this for the members of my family also daily. Since praying this I hear His still small voice more often than ever. He has taken captive my every thought, word and deed. He is keeping me from sins of commission and ommission. Boy I wish I had done this many years ago. The Holy spirit is doing this work in me, as I become less me and more  Jesus. Everyday I am dying more to self, and now I undertsand so much better what Paul meant when he said:

Philippians 1:21New International Version (NIV)

21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

As I die to myself I am gaining so much Jesus!!!

Powerful message!  At first I thought, dang I'm not humble.  I keep thinking of ways to be a better servant to God, a wife, recovering alcoholic/addict, friend, sharer of my experience, strength and hope, etc.  Those aren't selfish, they are thinking of others and using my skills God has blessed me with.  Yes, I am guilty of thinking less of myself at times.  I turn to my Higher Power, my support group and RHM and think of myself less.  I then am able to remember the gifts I have been given and the things I have learned and the self absorption least, for then.  It always stands there ready to re-enter my brain!

Amen!! Thank you Pastor Dion for another daily devotion. :-) My husband always says many people need to humble them selves. He's even talked to men at work that get really upset he told the one guy Jeff you really need to humble yourself. He asl him if he had a bible and he said no. He ask him if he believed in God, he said yes. My husband said Jeff I never really preach to anyone at work. He told him if you humble yourself and buy a bible and start to read it you will start to find peace. He told him that when you start to seek for God your like will start to change. He told him he won't worry about everything he has to do at work just do it put your day in and don't worry about others. I pray Jeff bought a bible he's a nice guy he just gets ttso unset and hurt about what other people get to do.. That's the only guy my husband said anything like that to at work and he's not like that. Jeff, was really going down the wrong path. He needs to find the narrow path to the stright gate and that takes time for us all. If stops worring about everyone else at work he will do just fine. My husband have many people come to his office when he's at work about their problems. He's their number one computer guy for 30 years and he always had to network into other states and countries. But he always stops and give them his time. He leaves at 6:00 a.m and sometimes don't get home until 5:30 - 6:00 p.m. He's one of the most humble men I know. What I love the most is he's my husband. <3 Thank You Father for my dear husband. <3 Amen
