He told them this parable. 'Which of you men, if you had one hundred sheep, and lost one of them, wouldn't leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one that was lost, until he found it?' Luke 15:3 WEBWhen I first got serious about serving the Lord Jesus, I was a musician and played ...

Yahweh spoke to Manasseh, and to his people; but they didn't listen. Therefore Yahweh brought on them the captains of the army of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh in chains, bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon. When he was in distress, he begged Yahweh his God, and humbled himse...

The Spirit of Heaviness

  • to provide for those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, that he may be glorified. Isaiah 61:3 WEB

Have you ever felt so down, so lethargic, that you begin to ask yourself, 'What is the point of it all?' There are many things in this verse but the one that I want to mention today is the 'spirit of heaviness', better known by its bona fide name: 'Depression.'

It can settle on anyone given the right circumstances and none of us are immune to it. We all like to think that we have it together, but really we are just one phone call away from crying at any given moment.

Once when we were overworked and nearly burned out, we went to an exhilarating praise and worship conference that lasted for three days. After the first night, I began to feel lighter, and brighter. Soon I really got into it and by the end of the conference, I felt renewed.

When I left the conference, I felt like I was walking on air and didn't have a care in the world. When I had arrived, I was pretty down, but afterwards I was as light as a feather and cheerful. I would not have cared if the world were ending. What a stark contrast.

Praise and depression are polar opposites and repel each other. If you are down, depressed, heavy, you will not feel like praising the Lord. If you are praising the Lord, then you will not feel like being depressed. If you are feeling 'heavy' today find some good praise and worship music and soak in it for an hour. Begin to praise the Lord along with it and that spirit of heaviness will flee out of hearing range.

Prayer: Father, I praise You today, please deliver me from the spirit of heaviness. Fill my life with Your presence, bring the right people, the right music, and the right opportunities into my life, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Note: Happy Sunday! We pray that you all have a very blessed and peaceful day. If you have a prayer request, please remember you can send them in any day of the week to our private prayer network. Just click on the Prayer link on the site menu. We and the prayer team will be honored to lift up your needs!

David and Dianna Wyles
David and Dianna Wyles Amen! That battle of depression I know too well! I thank my Father daily for holding me through some really tough times in my battle with, depression & anxiety. Luckly God has given me an armor of truth that even my twisted perspective, when deep in the pits of dispair, cannot argue with. I know God's plans are for a hope and a future and feeling anything less is lies from the enemy. I may have to experience it and feel it but I don't have to believe it! I can call on my Father who wraps me in his healing embrace until I can function in the right light again. What an Awesome God we have! Thank you Pastor for all you do! This mesage was perfect timing as always! Pastor's Prayer: Father, I praise You today, please deliver me from the spirit of heaviness. Fill my life with Your presence, bring the right people, the right music, and the right opportunities into my life, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Mary Pat Taylor
Mary Pat Taylor Chronic depression more complicated than that, and often needs medical help.  But I thank the Lord everyday for helping me fight it and lifitng that depression when it's too much for me.  He helps me not only through praise and prayer, but has provided things that make me happy when I do them and lift my spirits: my animals, especially when I can get out and train Jessie in agility, and playing my guitar. I thank the Lord for these blessings which help me throw off that heaviness! Working out also helps, when I can do that. :)  It helps with the physical side of depression. The brain is a physical organ and chronic depression is an illness of it.

Mark Duell
Mark Duell Thanks for the devotional Pastor Dion. I know I tried to deny being depressed. I was fed up with the worldly church. I saw the country that I use to love being given over to satan. I was hunkering down preparing for the worst. I didn't want to do things or go anywhere. My view and outlook on life was very negative. But at the same time I did learn a lot. I believe it was a time of growing that the Lord allowed me to go through. A time to show me that I am weak and He is strong. A time to show me that my goals and desires in life were too much centered around me and not enough around Him. I learned that there is a lot of false teaching out there or things that should be taught but aren't being taught. Gods Word is the ultimate source of Truth. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit and time in prayer seeking understanding, He has pulled me out from under the heaviness of depression. Have the things that are wrong with this country and world disappeared? No. But now I still remain alert but know that no matter what, His timing is perfect and His plan is perfect. That I serve a risen Saviour who is in control. Not me. Just listen and do as the Holy Spirit guides you to do. Test everything with the pure Word of God. Enjoy what the Lord has blessed you with, no matter how small or little it may be. Be thankful in everything.

Twila Stierwalt
Twila Stierwalt  I to suffered with a deep depression in my past, when I lost my best friend to cancer. I was very involved in the last year of her life. I gave her her shots every day and watched her suffer so. It took me over a year to greave for her. This was the darkest time of my life. I was in Gods word at that time and God wsed this to comfort me and restore my spirit. In Gods timing He did send me a new friend not to replace Kathy but it did help my depression. I know that Gods timing is always right and that He never waist anything.

David and Dianna Wyles
David and Dianna Wyles Amen! Loss can be so devastating! We are still picking up the pieces from the loss of my sister of the heart. My kids called her auntie all there lives and when God claimed victory over her cancer and called her home to rest in peace, it was one of the hardest times in our lives. But the Lord is good and healing has happened.  Praying with you today.

Kathy Kingery
Kathy Kingery Thank you for this message. I'm constantly praying for my daughters chronic depression to be lifted.  Something she's been dealing with for years. It's a roller coaster life for her and has so many factors.  Trying to always get her to pray for peace in her heart, soul and mind. Wish we could do it by osmosis. May you all find peace in the spirit today and always. Amen.

Wesley Paulus
Wesley Paulus Amen!!!!!   This happened to me last night.  I feel renewed andI feel God's love surrounding me and I feel God's love more and more  I was really feeling the spirit of heaviness last night big time, so I turned the channel to the Oral Roberts church service and they were worshipping and I felt the spirit of heaviness just melt away as I worshipped for 2 and a half hours on one of you tubes worship channels. I went to church this morning and I love the feeling I have right now. It's like the fears and worries are fading and I feel my self and  my spirit getting stronger.   Thank you Jesus!!!  Thank you pastor Dion for being a vessel for God's word!!! Amen!!

Dion Todd
Dion Todd It is true, anointed worship will drive the dark cloud away, though at first it will try and make you leave so that it can go with you. When David played his lyre, the evil spirit would leave Saul (1Sam. 16:23).
