The Hot Head

  • Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made himself a booth, and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city. Yahweh God prepared a vine, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine. But God prepared a worm at dawn the next day, and it chewed on the vine, so that it withered. When the sun arose, God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah's head, so that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, 'It is better for me to die than to live.' Jonah 4:5 WEB

Jonah, the mighty prophet of God, sat there in the blazing heat and wished that he was dead. He had been through a long journey to get to Nineveh, and even spent a couple of nights in a fish hotel. Now Jonah was so angry that God had spared the city that he had prophesied the destruction of, that he sulked.

He could have been glad that over 120,000 people had repented at his preaching, and they turned to the Lord in prayer and fasting, but he was not. Jonah was unconcerned about the death of 120,000 others. What concerned him at the moment was the blazing sun on his head, because the plant which had given him shade, had now died. He was concerned over a small plant, but was angry at God for sparing an entire city.

Every parent knows that at some point your children need to be disciplined. When left to themselves, they will not usually turn out well. When this becomes necessary, it is the parents' job to provide it.

So God provided everything that Jonah needed to have the right outlook. God provided a plant to cool him, the next day a worm to eat the plant, then the blazing sun and a scorching east wind on his head, finally His word to bring balance. Would God bring an attitude adjustment like that? Apparently so.

Our Father will also provide everything that we need, and sometimes it involves withholding something that we think that we need, or providing something else that we don't think we need. God loves you, and wants you to grow and fulfill the plans that He has for you. Therefore, He will not leave you to grow like a weed (Hebrews 12:6), but will provide whatever it takes along the way to fulfill your destiny. He loves us and only desires the best for our lives, but when you submit your life to Him, He can be relentless in bringing that to pass.

Prayer: Father, I thank You today. Let me learn lessons quickly and not be stubborn and unchanging. May Your will be done in my life. Please give me the grace to accept change and help me keep a positive attitude during the day. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

David and Dianna Wyles
David and Dianna Wyles Amen! "He loves us and only desires the best for our lives, but when you submit your life to Him, He can be relentless in bringing that to pass." Oh man! Is that statement ever true!! I've been on this journey of faith for a while now (off and on most my life but ON for the last few years) God can be so relentless in ushering his will into ones life! especially if that is what you are praying for! We (I) always have this image of what God's plan looks like, but he has got the blueprints and I do not so I'm often very wrong in my invisionings of how it should be... God has never let me down though, his plans have always turned out better than I could have imagined anyway;) Thank you Pastor for always being so attentive to God's messages for his children! What a blessing You, Sylvia, and this Ministry is to so many! Blessed beyond our wildest dreams to have Refreshing Hope and You blazing a way for us to walk in God's love and light!   Pastor's Prayer: Father, I thank You today. Let me learn lessons quickly and not be stubborn and unchanging. May Your will be done in my life. Please give me the grace to accept change and help me keep a positive attitude during the day. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Kath Paro
Kath Paro Dion~ Thank you again for your words.  I think I can relate them with my recent experience of rebellion against His will.  I need to do an intensive self inventory and was avoiding it feeling deep fear.  Yesterday the rebellion ceased.  What a relief.  Now I have the right out look on my inventory, it is to help me, not drag me down.  Thank you dear Lord for Your patience and love.

Diane Symborski✝
Diane Symborski✝ Amen! Thank you Pastor Dion for your daily devotion. :-) Father, I pray if you get angry with me please show me the right way and what you want me to do. I pray in Jesus, Name. Amen! I never get mad or angry with my Father i've cried many of times and talk to him while tears al pouring down my face.. I think we all cry or break down when talking to our Father it some really sad things are bad things that we'll go to him and talk about. So what happens is we just break down and cry. When we cry it might just help take away some of the pain. <3 I know that God can get angry everyone thinks that can't hapen and these are people inj my own family that ae not walking with Jesus as I am. They say God don't get mad and he would not do that. Well he's our father and if we need to learn a lesson he's goi g to show us. I walked threw many bad times and i'm sure it weas all for the good yo show me that you need to change your ways and make it right. Amen. <3 I love you Father and thank you for all that you do for me. Amen <3
