Seventy Two Hours

When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters were taken captive. Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voice and wept until they had no more power to weep. David's two wives were taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the souls of all the people were grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters; but David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God. 1 Samuel 30:3–6 WEB.

David stood amidst the ashes of his burned city with tears running down his face. Though he had been anointed as king years ago, he had been running from his father-in-law Saul ever since. Then today, while the men were away, Amalekite raiders had burned their city and carried off their families and belongings. Some of his men discussed stoning him.

It was a difficult time for David, but he strengthened himself in God. Within seventy-two hours, everything had changed. With God's help, David rescued their families and recovered all that had been taken (1 Samuel 30:18). King Saul died during a battle with the Philistines (1 Samuel 31:3), and they made David king over Judah (2 Samuel 2:4).

Though David was standing there in tears that day, his breakthrough was so close. Things that hadn't changed for years were only hours away. Yet, David didn't know this. He would have missed the greatest years of his life if he had given up and fallen on his sword.

It's always darkest right before the breakthrough. The battle can become so intense that you want to quit, but hang on for another day. A lot can change in seventy-two hours. You are closer now than ever to seeing the promises of God fulfilled in your life.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, please give me a heart like David that will trust You even in the face of adversity. Strengthen me, Lord, and help me to see past the problem. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
