The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn't dwell in temples made with hands, neither is he served by men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things. Acts 17:24 WEBWhen I was growing up, we us...

RHM Devotional: Heroes and Monsters from Refreshing Hope Ministries on Vimeo. Today I want to talk about the potential of being a Hero, or a Monster, that exists inside each one of us. We get to choose. Once when Jesus was preaching from a boat, He told a parable about a man that sowed wheat in H...

He said to them, 'Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to the whole creation.' Mark 16:15 WEBJesus spoke these words to the eleven Apostles before He ascended to heaven. There is so much that could be said about this, but today we cover 'The Gospel.' The word Gospel means 'glad tidings, good...

I Am Going Fishing

  • Simon Peter said to them, 'I'm going fishing.' They told him, 'We are also coming with you.' They immediately went out, and entered into the boat. That night, they caught nothing. But when day had already come, Jesus stood on the beach, yet the disciples didn't know that it was Jesus. John 21:3 WEB

While standing by the shore of the sea of Galilee with the waves gently rolling in, Peter was so discouraged. The One that he had thought was the Messiah and soon to be king, had been beaten, scourged and crucified. On top of that Peter had denied that he even knew Him three times and had then abandoned Jesus at the last moment. He did not even attend the crucifixion or the burial. Now He was gone, and everything that he thought God was doing had fallen apart.

This was Peter's fork in the road. Certainly God had been with them at the beginning, but where was He now? Peter gave up on the dream and said: 'I am going fishing.' In other words, he would return to his old life. When he did, Jesus appeared to him on the shore and called him right back to the work that he had left. Though things had taken an unexpected turn, everything was right on schedule. Peter just did not see it.

Sometimes God calls us to do something and then it appears to fall apart, but in the bigger picture, it is still right on schedule. When this happens our tendency is to return to our past. I have done this more than once myself.

Jesus is always calling us forward, and never into our past. God has plans for you and the battle scars only mean that you are a veteran. If you decide to stop and go fishing, know that you will not catch anything and that Jesus will be calling you back to the work and into your future.

Prayer: Father, guide me this day. Help me to see the way clearly. Direct my paths and speak to me in a way that I understand and know that it is You. I want more of You in my life Lord, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Note: Happy Friday! As some of you may now from the January newsletter, we will be going through "The Love Dare" for forty days, beginning February 1st. This is a great series which helps us cover His principles for marriage. If you are interested, you can find the sign up page linked in the newsletter, or at the top of the announcements on the home page. If you have any questions about it, just comment after the devotional here and we will help you :). God bless!

Molly Miller
Molly Miller Hi, RHM family.... i am interested. My husband, Len, is a non believer . He was raised Catholic, but the teachings fell flat and he did not internalize. I was also raise Catholic, with a strong, loving family just like Len's.  I have been nurturing a relationship with God, not just knowing ABOUT him. (bible study/ church/prayer) I will offerr this to Len, but I doubt he'll take it.  I have been praying God softes len'd heart and we " God and I" can lead him to the peace of Jesus' arms..... i will do this alone, and hopefully it will stegthen  us. Len may see my peace/ want it / join me....

Cheryl Hepler
Cheryl Hepler Hello,  sorry I am behind in devotions but save them hoping to read. love particular words like:  scars are a sign of being a vet, calls us forward not into our past, & did have something fall apart I did I enjoyed...a prison ministery to women in prison.  I am older & have physical limitations.  Wonder what He might do with this.  Know nothing impossible for Him. Pastor Todd sure glad He called you in again from the pasture or this conversation would not be gapping.  This whole RHM would not be happening.  I am sure many feel this way.  Blessings to you & Sylvia!
