Flow Through Me from Refreshing Hope Ministries on Vimeo. Today I want to talk about something that is at the very core of knowing Jesus: the Holy Spirit. This is fundamental stuff, but sometimes we build our doctrines so high that we can no longer see the foundation, yet it is very important tha...

The Power of Suggestion

  • Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing in those days. Afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry. The devil said to him, 'If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.' Jesus answered him, saying, 'It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.' Luke 4:1 WEB

Jesus heard God speaking to Him right after He was baptized in the Jordon river, and a voice came from heaven, 'You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased' (Luke 3:22). Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, and fasted for forty days.

The devil came to tempt (test) Him. The first temptation was, 'If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.' The devil saw that Jesus was hungry and thought it may be an opening. Also, he brought into question whether Jesus was actually the Son of God to instill a little doubt and confusion.

Now Jesus had already heard a voice speaking to Him earlier, but now here is another voice, or is it the same one? Are they from the same source? Should He turn this stone into bread? Jesus needed to know whether this voice was God speaking to Him again, or a counterfeit. He turned to the scriptures and His answer came from Deuteronomy 8:3. Whatever does not agree with scripture does not come from God. The word of God is our anchor.

The next temptation was a chance to set up an earthly kingdom even more powerful than the Roman empire. All of it could be given to Jesus here and now, if Jesus would only worship him. It was a legitimate desire. Jesus could set up a government that truly cared about the people and He could do a lot of good. But it was a compromise and meant using the world's methods. He would have to turn His back on His calling. Once again Jesus turned to scripture and quoted Deuteronomy 6:13, decisively rejecting the offer.

The third suggestion was to perform a miracle by casting Himself off the temple, possibly to make people believe in Him, but also to prove that He is the Son of God. This time satan quotes scripture to Jesus (Psalm 91:11).

In all of this temptation, satan can only 'suggest' that Jesus do something. It was entirely up to Jesus to perform the act. Jesus again refers to scripture and quotes Deuteronomy 6:16. Fresh out of ideas, the devil left Him until a more 'opportune' time.

The devil 'suggested' things to Jesus, but he could not get around the clear word of God when directly confronted with it from a person that would not compromise. Though he would have loved to, satan was unable to make Jesus do anything. He was limited to the power of suggestion.

Jesus was also obeying the scripture as well. Telling the devil to flee when you are friends with him will not work. You have be committed to God first, and then resist the temptation, then he will flee just as He left Jesus. 'Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you' (James 4:7).

If you have something that bothers you and will not go away, or have feelings of worthlessness, shame, or you are being tempted to do wrong, or you are full of fear, find a scripture for it and memorize it. Say it out loud through out the day. We all have our own weaknesses. Find a scripture that addresses it and stand on it. It is amazing what the light of scripture will do to the kingdom of darkness.

Prayer: Father, I pray that You bring me the scriptures that I need to stand on and help me beat this for I put my trust in You. Teach me Your word and help me understand my role in this. Show me the big picture, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Sarah Ader Amen! This was definitely a Word for me today, Todd! I have been feeling like God is calling me to a 7 day, water only fast lately. Then every time I start, I start to second guess myself and wonder if it's just my OCD speaking and not really God.. It's been very confusing and I want to do the right thing but I get so unsure when I try to start.. =/  It would be so much easier if God were just spelling everything out every step of the way so there was no question! Lol... But I know that's not how Faith works.. please pray for me to have the strength, Faith, and clarity to do the right thing and follow through. God Bless! -Sarah-

Dorene Glaze Good message ! reminded me of a song the Lord gave me years ago , the chorus goes like this .  Stand fast in the word ,know that he is God ,stand still you will see why your feet are shod , standing strong , standing firm , stand upon the word ,having stood all you can just stand ,stand ,stand .Many times Ive just had to get a scripture and say it over and over standing on it to get through the thing I was battling .God is good and keeps his word !     Thank you pastor for these messages daily they really do help Norman and me start our day with our minds on the Lord.

Cheryl Hepler I love the way Pastor Dion you explain the questions Satan proposed.  The depth adds extra mest to chew on.  Keeping a verse for the day in wake of continual attacks of the terrorists in Paris & all other attacks let alone threats of more is another place to put verses that keep our eyes on Jesus!  Perfect L O V E cast out alllll fears!

Marie Hall I really needed this today thank you it seems as I am getting to know the Lord more and more, I guess the enemy hits me harder,  I am praying for God to take all this brokenness the pain in my heart and make me whole,  I am begging and pleading with him I don't care about anything else in my life right now I just want to know,  Him I am seeking him with everything I am and I hearpeople say,  know who you are in Christ and I don't really understand that and so they look at me or talk to me like I am crazy I don't catch on to things as quickly as normal people I was in a wreck on life support for 9 days and had a closed head injury and I came out of it with short term memory loss and the Lord helps me with it daily and I thank him and praise him but it does not mean I am crazy,  yes sometimes things are very confusing to me but the Lord helps me to finally understand maybe not at that moment but he does help me to understand. There has been so much hurt heartache disappointment in my life and I want the Lord to take it away to make me whole so that he can use me and him to get all the glory in no way am I wanting pitty and I have got off the pitty pot myself cause I used to be like poor me why did I have to go through this or that but I do not live that way anymore I know the Lord has a plan for me but I can't seem to get rid of the horrible pain in my heart from so many things happening and get this I have no memory of my childhood except for the traumas that happened I don't remember going to school or anything like that only the bad horrible things do i remember I am asking y'all again will you ask God to meet me " face to face" please I feel like I am stuck and I do not want to give up but i am so close I want to thank you in advance and May God bless each and everyone of you all !!!

Mary Pat Taylor
Mary Pat Taylor I really needed this today! So often lately when I think of God's plans for me, I've been attacked by feelings of worthlessness.  When I pray, God has been reminding me of all the things He has already done in my life, even the little things that simply make me happy.  I felt like I heard Him saying "If I have already given you these things, the little things, why would I not give you the wonderful life and future I have planned for you?"  And of course, there is the biggest gift of all, my salvation by His Son.

Deleted Member Mary Pat, please know that Jesus loves us so much and He died on the cross for us, thats an amazing love. Please don't ever feel worthless, that is just satan trying to bring you down, but believe on Jesus and know that He loves you so much and that He will help you and bring you through any storm you might be facing. He will always be there for you and He can do all things that you need. Love and hugs, Tamara

Mary Pat Taylor
Mary Pat Taylor Thank you Tamara. ((hugs)) and love to you too! It's something that I have to fight over and over again. And it's not just thoughts of not being beautiful enough, not being smart enough, being a failure. I get that also from, well, one person in my life too. I don't know if it's deliberate or not, but if I try to say how what was said or done make me feel, most of the time he dismisses it. Sometimes I do get an apology though. I feel I'm where God wants me for now, and I'm trying to do my best. But some days it's hard.

Carol Pady Amen! When in doubt pray about it and look into His Word. Satan can come as a wolf in sheep's clothing.  Trust in the Lord and He will provide confirmation if it is coming from Him or an attempt by Satan to make us stumble.
