The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn't dwell in temples made with hands, neither is he served by men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things. Acts 17:24 WEBWhen I was growing up, we us...

RHM Devotional: Heroes and Monsters from Refreshing Hope Ministries on Vimeo. Today I want to talk about the potential of being a Hero, or a Monster, that exists inside each one of us. We get to choose. Once when Jesus was preaching from a boat, He told a parable about a man that sowed wheat in H...

He said to them, 'Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to the whole creation.' Mark 16:15 WEBJesus spoke these words to the eleven Apostles before He ascended to heaven. There is so much that could be said about this, but today we cover 'The Gospel.' The word Gospel means 'glad tidings, good...

The Little Shepherd Boy

  • It happened, when they had come, that he looked at Eliab, and said, Surely Yahweh's anointed is before him. But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Don't look on his face, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for Yahweh sees not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.' 1 Samuel 16:6 WEB

When Samuel came to anoint the next king of Israel, the Lord had only told him that it would be a son of Jesse, but Jesse had eight sons. So Samuel went to see Jesse and anoint one of his sons as the next king. The eldest brother Eliab, was tall and handsome. When Samuel saw him, he thought, "This is one!", yet God simply told him, 'I have rejected this one.'

Samuel went through the first seven sons of Jesse, and it was all the same: 'The Lord has not chosen this one.' It turned out that God wanted the little shepherd boy who was playing the harp and singing while tending the sheep: young David. He had no idea that he would be a giant killer and the next king of the land.

The Lord does not look on the outward appearance, like we do. He looks on the heart, the inside that we like to hide. Why you do something is more important than what you do. The people who were praying on the street corner were wasting their time because they only did it to be seen by others (Mat 6:5). Prayer was good, but their motives were bad.

Still today, it will be the one that God chooses and anoints that will do His work. When God chooses you for a task, no one can stop you. Though it may feel like it is delayed, it will come to pass in His timing. God took the little shepherd boy, anointed him and raised him up to be the leader of His people, and without the approval of his brothers (1 sam 17:28).

Keep a positive attitude. Don't let the trials get you down. Keep putting God first and He will raise you up, even if it means outside of their circle. Only you can stop God's plan for your life, no one else has the authority to do so.

Prayer: Father I thank You so much for all that You have done for me. Guide me to where I need to be. My life, is Yours. I choose to trust You today in blind faith. I cannot see what is coming, but You already know the outcome and are able to prepare me for anything that I face. You chose me Lord, and I choose You, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Twila Stierwalt
Twila Stierwalt I love this story, because It shows that God is in charge and that our ways are not Gods ways and our thoughts are not Gods thoughts for as high as the heavens are above the earth so is Gods thoughts higher than our thoughts and His ways higher than out ways. It is all in Gods timing and His purpose and plan for us. I thank God and trust that His way is best. It is not always a smooth path but He puts us in a spacious place. I pray that God enlarges my territory. I also know that I am Gods holy one, and that He delights in me. Psalm 31:23, O love the LORD all His godly ones! ( He delights in me, PRAISE GOD!!!) The LORD preserves me His faithful one, and fully recompenses the proud doer, be strong and let your heart take courage all you who hope in the LORD.

Chris Dibbern
Chris Dibbern A powerful one, in my life! Thank you for this. I have gotten all wrapped up in timings, lately. I thought what the Lord said should already have come to pass. Yet, as I was riding the bus, this morning, He showed me how the passenger tugs the cord, signalling a request to stop. Yet, it's on the bus driver--who can see the road conditions, the sidewalk, and so forth--to decide precisely where and when to do so. And, often, as you step off the bus, you'll even get to see why.Silly ol' me, I keep tuggin' on that cord, panicking, "ohh gosh why aren't you stopping!?" LOL. Four years is a long time, though. Thankfully, I began this journey having hope that God is real and Jesus is who he claimed. Now, I know He's real in the same way I know my parents are. As a former atheist (10+ years ago), I long thought I couldn't know these things, for sure, in this life. I was wrong. Invest in Him to the point of bitter loss, and He'll replace your "losses" with Himself. :-)

Kathy Banfield
Kathy Banfield I love David's story--it really gives me hope in my own messy life!  Too many people judge outward appearences, and I grew up in a very judgemental family. My ex husband says i go to the opposite extreme and often find myself befriending lowly outcasts, but every person is important to God! Yes, it all depends on our motives, and I thank you so much for today's timely devotion--once again, these words resonate with my own personal situation!
