Anchor of the Soul from Refreshing Hope Ministries on Vimeo. When people lose hope, they lie down and die. They lose the will to live and fight any longer. Hopelessness is utter despair, the belief that nothing good will happen. When you begin to think like this, it will bring a desire to die. A ...

The Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why don't your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?" He answered them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honors me with their lips, But their heart is far f...

Quality Over Quantity

  • But you, when you pray, enter into your inner chamber, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. In praying, dont use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking. Matthew 6:6 WEB

As the speaker walked up to the pulpit, I could feel the hair on the back of my neck rising. I just knew that he was going to call on me to pray in front of the whole church again. They always asked someone to open the service with prayer and some had long beautiful prayers. Not me I avoided praying in public as much as possible.

As I came to know the Lord better I realized that fearing public prayer was not right, but making a performance out of it was not right either. God does not care if I have a stutter when I pray. Moses had a speech impediment and was still the chosen one. Jesus said, When you give, when you pray, when you fast. But you never do it to impress others, or you have your reward already, the praise of men.

It is not the quantity, but the quality. Leave the long beautiful public speeches to the politicians and when you really want to connect with God, get somewhere quiet, pray and listen. Talk to Him as you would a friend. After all, He knows you better than anyone else and nothing that you do or say is in secret to begin with. He sees the way that you talk around your friends.

Also never, ever, ever be ashamed of Jesus. When you get backed into a corner on your faith, that is when you need to take a stand and say, Yes, I love Jesus! and not like Peter who did not know the man. Jesus said, For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed, when he comes in his glory, and the glory of the Father, and of the holy angels. (Luke 9:26).

James wrote, The effective, earnest prayer of a righteous man is powerfully effective. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it didnt rain on the earth for three years and six months. He prayed again, and the sky gave rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit (James 5:1618).

Prayer is very powerful. We often have not, because we never asked for it. Make your needs known to God. Dont be afraid of praying, anywhere. God loves you and wants to hear from you today.

Prayer: Father I thank You for today. I want You to know that I welcome You to be a part of my life. Guide me, teach me, mold me, I yield my will to You. In the name of Jesus I pray.

Note: Happy Friday! We are proud to announce a new small group at RHM, called "What''s for Dinner?". This group, started by one of our amazing members, is for sharing recipes and cooking tips, especially ones that can help us stretch our dollar. Who doesn''t need that :)? We believe that it has the potential to be a great place for fun and fellowship, like a family gathering at the hearth. If this sounds like a place for you, just go to the Groups link on the website menu and you will see it on the list. There are a number of other wonderful groups on that list too, so please do check them out as well!

Vickie Bennett
Vickie Bennett I have indeed felt that way before, that God doesn't hear prayer any better for being prettied up! One of the reasons I have long enjoyed your posts is that they are down to earth & easy to understand & to FEEL.  I have trouble praying out loud, BC I cry. It's embarrassing. Idk why I do, just the emotion, I guess!

Linda Brimigion
Linda Brimigion I, too, was afraid to pray in public when I first became a follower of Yeshua.  I started attending a bible study in my neighborhood and the prayers said by others in the group were passionate and heartfelt.  I thought I could never pray as beautifully as they did.  i never prayed out loud, but did pray silently.  However, after attending for a few months, the leader called on me to say a closing prayer.  I was panicky!  What would I say?  How could I say it?!  After a moment, I opened my mouth and out came the words.  I don't remember what I said but my fear of praying aloud had disappeared!  I now am comfortable praying aloud, because I'm only focused on the Father and not on what people think of my prayer.

Sylvia Todd
Sylvia Todd I know exactly what you mean, Linda! I used to be so intimated by the prayers of others! Now I just try to be myself, whether praying in public or in private. I think that's the best case, because He knows who we are anyway, so covering it with "impressive" words doesn't help :)!

Twila Stierwalt
Twila Stierwalt I use to be afraid to pray in public, but we have such fellowship in our church, especially in our small group. I have learned to pray from my heart to God, not so it sounds good to man. Great devotion.

Kathy Banfield
Kathy Banfield This is so true! A few weeks ago, after my surgery, the first place I walked to was the small chapel in the hospital. (What a coincidence--it was only a few feet from my room!) And at first, my mind was so muddled with pain medications and I was so weak, the only prayer I could utter was a whisper. But God heard me! That little chapel wasn't comprable to the huge cathedrals in Rome or New York, or even my town parish--but God heard my lowly prayers there and didn't expect me to vocalize loudly or leap for joy. But now, I feel like going back to that little chapel and as soon as my sutures are removed, I just might do so. There's been other times when I felt so sick that all I could do was whisper.God knows our thoughts, and He will accept that!

Carol Pady
Carol Pady Amen! Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship with our Lord. I pray all day in solitude, not outloud. I speak to Him as a child would speak to her Father. He is the center of my life, a friend that sticks closer than a brother! When I pray outloud with anyone I don't worry about how impressive or eloquent my speech is, I simply pray from my heart and He hears me. He answers my prayers, because my Father cares!

Karen Pasquinelli
Karen Pasquinelli This fits me so well.  When I used to hear people pray the long prayers with fancy words I used to think "oh my I can't pray like that, I am not a person of fancy words, I just get the the point and my words are plain.  So, my prayers are basically short but sweet (so to speak).  I also used to think I actually had to go to a real room and pray, then I found out if I clear my mind of all other thoughts and sounds in the room, I can pray and God hears me.  So, to me my mind is the room that I go to, I don't believe it has to be a physical room.  I don't know if I am right or wrong on this, some people feel it has to be a physical room.

Diane Casey
Diane Casey once again you are on point with today's devotional. I am always fearful of public prayer. It seems like I don't know what to say, i am ashamed to admit it, but sometimes When I pray privately, I sometimes don't know what to say. In private, I just talk to God about family, church family, and those who are sick, I pray for constantly. I just talk about things to God. But in public.......but I thank God that the Holy Spirit helps me to get a pray out. but like you say, it's not the quantity, but the quality, being effective. thanks again!

Kathy Hall Pastor Todd, I am so thankful for your daily devotional prayer. Every day you keep me lifted  in prayer, no matter what situation I'm facing I read your daily devotional and it gives me great comfort knowing God will never forsake us . Every day will have it's anxiety so we need not focus so much on what's not going right but pray and rejoice in the day that is given, stay on course and the Lord will direct our path. When we draw close to the Lord, the Lord will draw close b to us. Amen
