The Oak Tree

  • He said therefore, What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? It is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches. Luke 13:18 ESV

As I stared out of the window at the huge oak tree in our yard, I thought of what it looked like thirty years ago, when I first moved here. It was a small scrawny thing then. Now it is a huge tree and you could park several cars in its shade. It has limbs bigger than my torso.

It did not happen overnight. This magnificent oak took decades to get where it is now, and it could have easily been crushed or uprooted while it was still small. There was a time when it was small and weak but over time, using what God has provided for it each day, it has now become a mature oak tree.

The faith that is in you starts small, but it grows over time. As you walk with the Lord, talk with the Lord, and rely on His provision, that little seed within you will grow and become unshakable. Don't try and rush it. You will become disappointed. Take it one day at a time and some day when you look back on where you are now, you will laugh. Faith and oak trees both have to grow over time.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, be with me this day and provide the things that I need to grow. Strengthen my faith and guide my steps with Your Holy Spirit, in the name of Jesus.

Martin Snyder
Martin Snyder I have been shot down many times trying to make this same point. "Faith of a mustard seed" doesn't mean a tiny amount of faith can work miracles, it means a tiny amount of faith, nurtured and grown with love and dedication can become mighty and powerful and "able to leap tall buildings with a single bound". (as well as providing food, shelter and relief from the heat of the blazing sun)

Cathy DeReimer
Cathy DeReimer  I really needed to read that this morning.  I have just recently started going to church, about 2 1/2 years ago, and I do feel like things aren't happening quick enough for me. I see the fire in a lot of people at church. I want that fire that I see in others. But after reading this I realized that I am rushing it and that's why I'm not really feeling the fire that I am chasing at this time. I feel like I hit a brick wall sometimes when I start feeling the fire. It really gets frustrating  and sometimes I want to quit because I feel like I can't fight this fight against the enemy and have thought about quitting a few times. But after reading this I realized I have to be patient and let that mustard seed grow and  keep fighting the fight because I am not alone in this war against the enemy.

Kay Rushin
Kay Rushin Hmm...I am wondering what you mean about fire? Everyone expresses love for God in different ways....Some jump up and down, some sit quietly and let the tears of joy come.....I see you are here, so the fire is lit...you have to follow your own path and not worry about those around you....Everyone that says lord, lord.....It not about the true God anyway....Be encouraged.....God has it all in control........

Sylvia Todd
Sylvia Todd Martin, one thing that's certain is that if you believe in anything, there will be those to disagree with you :). Like Marilyn, I believe that God's truths are multi-faceted and many-layered. The facet of truth you see may not be the same as someone else's, but that doesn't make it any less true. Also, what God does in one situation is not the same as in another. I'm fairly certain that, in general, God's goal is not for us to have a tiny amount of faith...yet, I know there have been cases where He has worked miracles out of little to no faith because He is moving forward with plans greater than our faith, or because He is trying to teach us, or His own sovereign reasons.

Tina G
Tina G Its so great when I see the results of faith. Mine and others. I can be anywhere and out of the blue a prayer is answered, or I get a call or a text with good news. Or something works out way better than i could have planned. It actually tickles me and I might laugh out loud. It amazes me and I'll thank our heavenly father. The challenge for me is having patience for God to do His thing! But He NEVER fails :-)

Margaret Parks
Margaret Parks Blessings, Somedays I feel as though I am just "spinning my wheels" and not getting anywhere in my quest to make the right changes in my life.  Even after praying, I often feel as if things will never progress and I feel like a "baby Christian". I really am struggling with this and today's message has helped a lot. Thank you for listening. maggie

Stacie Chambers
Stacie Chambers Yes! This makes total sense! Struggle with this as well. It's funny because just lastnight at a Women's Bible Study, one sister told me that I just didn't know how much of a mighty woman of God I am. And others chimed in to agree with her. I honestly didn't get it. Was so puzzled! I was thinking, "Like where do you see this mighty woman of God... because... errr... uhhhh... let me tell you about all of my flaws and constant mess-ups of late." Much like you, I feel like a "baby Christian" so often. But as I reflect upon it now, I'd rather feel this way and be constantly in pursuit of God, than be cocky thinking that I am some mighty woman of God. I'd rather err on the side of not being all that...because I'm not. But I do encourage you (and myself too) to know that you are loved by a Mighty King, the Great Creator, the Beginning and the End! He loves you and He will NEVER leave you with your wheels just spinning. He will cause you to grow from faith to faith, and from glory to glory. Blessings... <3
