I Did It My Way

  • And on the seventh day God finished his work that He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all His work that He had done in creation. Genesis 2:2 ESV

After coming home from church, I went straight to work on the new mail server. I kept hearing about not working on the sabbath day on my audio Bible and when I flipped the Bible open, that is where it would land. You would think I could take a hint, but I managed to brush it off week after week. After all, this was Gods work and God does not want me to be lazy.

Today though, the work was like swimming in mud. What should have been a simple job, turned into a horrible ordeal. The machine seemed possessed. At the end of the day, I would have been ahead if I would have just stayed in bed. For a long time we would work on Sunday, but take off Monday or another day. This seemed fine. When I started working seven days a week, He cracked the whip.

I repented, said I was sorry, and the next day fixed the server in thirty minutes. Since then, I dont work seven days a week anymore and God has really blessed the other six.

When you feel the Lord speaking to you about something, listen. Dont be hardheaded like me. Can you have it your way? Absolutely. You will be much better off though, to go His way.

Prayer: Father, please bless the work of my hands and allow me to rest peacefully when I lay down. Help me get my work done in six days so I will not have to work seven, in the name of Jesus.

Kathy Banfield
Kathy Banfield This devotional reminds me of what happens to me every Sunday when I attempt to clean! Last Sunday, while scrubbing the bathroom, I forgot I had eggs boiling on the stove. You guessed it--they exploded, and then I had the KITCHEN to clean! The week before, I got bleach all over my new jeans! God surely is trying to tell me something!

Twila Stierwalt
Twila Stierwalt Our life is so busy, we do need that one day to rest. I think of how Christ would go off and pray to His Father for strength. He did that when He needed to, because He knew what was ahead of Him. We need this every day. God wants us to rest so we can help others. Some times we can't always do that on a Sunday because of certian jobs, but we need one day of rest. When I had to work in the nursing home, some times I did have to work on Sunday. I can remember being with 2 patients , on their way to meet Jesus. What a blessed time that was to minister to them and their family's.

Torin Parker
Torin Parker Thank you Pastor for your word. I would ask that we all read about the 10 Commandments in the Old Testament and then go to the new Testament and read especially in Acts and Revelation and prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten on the Sabbath subject.  God rested on the Seventh day and made it Holy.  Jesus died on Good Friday and even in his death Jesus observed God's Sabbath (Saturday). I ask you to read Acts because it illustrates that the Apostles kept the Sabbath and continued to preach every Sabbath (Saturday).  Now please remember these are the same men and women who saw Jesus resurrected, talked with him and yet they did not keep a Sunday Sabbath but God's Sabbath the 7th Day.  In Revelations God and Jesus say if you love me keep my commandments.... Always in Love and may God bless us all with the Holy Spirit to show us the right way.  God Bless

Lisa Kordich
Lisa Kordich I noticed the same thing. I used to work 7 days a week as well but finally gave up Saturday. My customers at first would be upset because when people need their computer fixed they don't want to wait a day extra, but in the end of that I was always blessed with enough work and even got more customers who did not mind the Saturday rest. I am back to working whatever day I get a call because work is scare again and I cannot risk telling people to wait a day. Thankfully I do not have work every day so I do get some rest.

Lisa Kordich
Lisa Kordich I have to say Saturday here. The Bible says that Jesus rose on the first day of the week and that is Sunday which would leave Saturday as the Sabbath (seventh day) also if we look at our Jewish brothers and sisters they still follow Saturday as the Sabbath which has been since the beginning of time. Just my two cents for all it is worth.

Karen Pasquinelli Years ago I asked a Pastor about those two days and he said that the calendar was changed and Sunday was the seventh day way back in the beginning, so I don't know, I just know it is confusing.  Thanks for your answer :)

Patricia Walker
Patricia Walker I do not to even turn my computer on over the weekends...during the week is enough!!  So my response to resting on the Sabath goes back to my childhood when I remember we all rested on Sunday!!  My siblings and I would get a ride to church (my Dad in wheelchair, my Mom didn't drive, we had no car anyway) Some wonderful folks would take us & bring us home.  We would read, help in the kitchen but not work.  No stores were open, expect for the one pharmacy & their hours were short on Sunday....When did we become a society where everything became 24/7??? And we stopped worshiping the Lord and resting on Sunday.  Our lives have become to hectic & loosing site of what is important. I read my Bible yesterday on Sunday, enjoyed my son's laughter ~~ talked to my brother who lives in Arkansas ~~ and Prayed for God's grace and goodness... Beautiful Sunday ~~ Amen.

Sylvia Todd That sounds like a wonderful Sunday, Patricia! Even Dion and I, who are the most computer-oriented of people, try to keep our computer time to a minimal on Sunday, if only because we are on it so much the other days, that our eyes need a bit of rest :).

Sylvia Todd I know what you mean, Lisa, it's more difficult when business is slow. Fortunately, our clients were mostly offices who were not open on Sundays. I pray that the Lord continues to bless your business and grants you the provision you need to be able to rest, in the name of Jesus!

Sylvia Todd
Sylvia Todd I know there are arguments to be made either way, but honestly, I believe the central point of God's commandment is that we need to take a day of rest, to slow down, spend time with Him and not wear ourselves down. There are those who work in industries that don't allow for a Saturday or Sunday off, for instance, many of our local church pastors and other staff :)! The staff at our local church take off on Monday, because the weekend is their busiest time. People in the service industry, grocery stores, restaurants, etc., have to work the shifts their assigned and make have their "Sabbath" on, say Wednesday. It's not an easy world to rest in :).

Dion Todd
Dion Todd Hi Torin, thank you for reading. I know that many people attend church on Saturday and choose to observe Saturday as the sabbath. I used to play in a praise band at a 7th day adventist church on Saturday. But now our church is open on Sunday, and if we want to go, it will be on Sunday. If you do go Saturday, there will be no one there.  The day that this server incident happened to me was on a Sunday, so that is what I wrote about. You should be worshiping God 7 days a week, and resting at least one day a week. That is what I try to observe. If I have to work all weekend, I will try and rest Monday. Unfortunately work is a part of our life, and sometimes we do not get to choose what day we take off.  “ One man esteems one day as more important. Another esteems every day alike. Let each man be fully assured in his own mind. ”   (Romans 14:5 WEB)
