One of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him. 'Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?' Jesus said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. A second likewise is...

Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 'How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me. Tell them, As I live, says Yahweh, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you' N...

Elijah said to him, Elisha, please wait here, for Yahweh has sent me to Jericho. He said, As Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you. So they came to Jericho. 2 Kings 2:4 WEBElisha had worked serving the prophet Elijah for several years when he suddenly asked him to stay behind. E...

Heart Like A Sponge

  • For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. James 3:16 ESV

Just as a sponge filled with liquid is our heart within us. It absorbs all the hurts and pains in our life. Usually when we come to the Lord, it is filled with yucky things like poison and bitterness. We invite Jesus into our heart and He comes into our life, but this is only the beginning. Often the bad things that were in our life the week before our conversion, are still there. We just hide them better. Yes, I know that we are a new creation in Christ, but we are to renew our mind (Rom 12:2) and put on the new man (Eph 4:24). I have been around church long enough to notice that some of us have not done that.

Over time, the Lord purifies us and removes the bad. It will usually involve pressure of some kind that squeezes us, much like a sponge. The Lord replaces our selfishness, bitterness, jealousy, and strife with His love, gentleness, compassion, and kindness if we let Him. It does not instantly happen. This is a lifelong process so there is no need to get in a hurry. He will work on something a while, give you a rest, and then start the next one. If you look back over your life, you should see some progress.

Some call it mountains and valleys, though in my experience, it is more like being held under water for a while, squeezed, and then pulled up for air at the very last minute like a sponge. There have been times that I really did not think that I was going to make it and then in 24 hours, everything changed. God is faithful, but when He is after something, He is relentless.

Tests dont last forever and you will not actually drown, it just feels that way. Small children cry and whine a lot to get their way, but a weaned child is content to wait (Psa 131:2). The sooner you submit, the sooner you will have relief. Working against Him will only prolong it. Take heart, when you do get to come up for air it is great!

Prayer: Lord draw my heart to You in a deeper way and let me find all that You have for me. Give me hope, touch me with Your presence and walk with me today, in the name of Jesus.

Robyn Quinn Hakeem
Robyn Quinn Hakeem My husband and I both talked about our issues with our fathers and how we don't have good self esteem because of it. God has been talking to us about this for awhile now, but we have to continue receiving His love in great measure until we find healing from our past. My hubby won't do it. We always argue and he defends himself when we do... It's getting really frustrating and I'm ready to leave him soon if some thing doesn't change. I don't have patience for a man who acts like a child and won't receive healing that's available.

Madalyn Myers
Madalyn Myers It is hard to know and feel that I am being tested at sometimes, But Christ will put us in a position to help others. I would look in the mirror and ask myself, Why is this happening only to gain insight from God who help me realize that I needed this test to get to the next level in life. With out that test, How could I handle the next step. Only for my heart to be that soaked sponge. To gain strength for my next passage in this life. Heart like A Sponge is a good testimony. I can relate to this passage.

Lesa M. Merrill
Lesa M. Merrill Very timely message pastor!  I am still struggling in my relationship and feel exactly like this sponge....that I'm being squeezed, given rest and squeezed again. I'm so tired. I know God is faithful and relentless -I feel both from Him. I just wish He would teach me soon the lessons He has for me to learn......I'm exhausted and lost. All I can do is wait on Him.
