A Lighthouse

  • Yahweh said, 'I will destroy man whom I have created from the surface of the ground; man, along with animals, creeping things, and birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.' But Noah found favor in Yahweh's eyes. This is the history of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time. Noah walked with God. Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Genesis 6:7 WEB

When the Earth had become totally corrupt and the thoughts of the people were only evil all the time, the Lord decided to start over, to reboot the human race. Only Noah was different from the rest. He was walking close to God, he was trying to do what was right, and therefore he found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives were spared and survived the coming flood. There were eight people saved through Noah's faith in God (1Peter 3:20, 2Peter 2:5). 'By faith, Noah, being warned about things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his house' (Hebrews 11:7).

Scripture does not mention that Noah's wife was particularly righteous, nor his sons, nor their wives. It only mentions Noah's relationship with God. 'Noah was a righteous man' and 'Noah walked with God.' In the same way, when Lot was rescued from Sodom, his wife and daughters also went out of the city with him.

Let us be like Joshua who said, 'And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD' (Joshua 24:15).

Later in 1 Kings 11:31, when the people of Israel began to backslide and Solomon turned away from following Him, God decided to divide Israel. He told Jeroboam that He would give him ten pieces (tribes), but because of His servant David, He would not give him all of it. So David's life continued to affect how God treated his family line decades later. Isn't that amazing?

Serving God will affect those around you and those that you care about. When you walk with God, it can influence your family line for generations. Your acts alone may not save them, but you will be a light and God will draw them. God can make you a lighthouse for those in need. Even a small candle light is bright when in complete darkness, and you may be the only light that those around you can see. So keep that light burning.

Prayer: Heavenly Father I thank You for saving my family. I pray that my entire family comes to know You personally. Please touch them, draw them to You, get their attention, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen!

Note: 'Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God.' Thank you so much for this Devotion today. I think we all have family members who are not saved and it grieves us deeply to think they may not go to Heaven. I love that we can be a light to them and possibly influence their lives or decisions. I pray daily for my family for salvation as I know a few of them have not yet excepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior which grieves me deeply.

In Jesus name Amen. Holy Spirit reminded me recently of that old song I learned in Sunday school as a child; this little light of mine. I asked God to help me let my light shine again; the light of His truth in me to others. Your devotional confirms it.
