Rejected Identity from Refreshing Hope Ministries on Vimeo. Today I want to talk about rejection, especially in your calling, your gifts, your talents, by those who are familiar with you. We can read the Bible and feel like Jesus had an automatic win button in every circumstance. Storms, disease,...

The Long Road

  • And the LORD said to you, You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over Israel. So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel. 2 Samuel 5:2 ESV

David was just a young boy when God had Samuel anoint him as king over Israel. David was probably between ten to fifteen when this happened (1 Sam 16:13). It does not give an exact age, but he was so young that he was not even considered to be a contender when they lined up his seven brothers (1 Sam 16:9).

When David was anointed with oil in the midst of his brothers, the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him. From that day forth, David began to grow into his destiny. Difficult obstacles appeared and divine doors opened. David killed lions, bears, giants (1 Sam 17:36) and tens of thousands of Philistines (1 Sam 18:7). He played music for king Saul and became his armor bearer (1 Sam 16:21). He loved and he lost (1 Sam 18:19).

Then at thirty, David actually became king. There was a gap of fifteen to twenty years between the promise and the fulfillment. God used this time to refine David, train him, establish him in the eyes of the people, and thoroughly test his character. You could have randomly chosen a day from David's life and it would have looked pretty mundane, but reading the book of highlights is exciting.

We often want it now and look at today, while God is looking at our entire life. It was a long road from the promise until the fulfillment. The day is coming when what the Lord has promised you will be fulfilled. That thing that has always been in the back of your mind, that you have almost given up on, will yet come to pass. That day is coming.

Leslie McLea I am waiting for the day all this and more will come to pass. I am way beyond 13,15 and 30. Days are long and sometimes so suffocating you can barely breath, yet, I continue to call out to God and to reach for the hem of his garment just to know I am still linked to him. Thank you for the encouragement this morning, I can hold on to hope a little longer.

Carol Pady
Carol Pady Nothing worth waiting for comes fast or easy. All things good come from God, in His perfect timing. We are to be patient and prayerful as we wait upon the Lord. Faith that God hears and will answer is all that is required. We must trust that all  things work together for our good. We must give thanks and praise Him everyday for all He has done and all He will do in our lives and our family's and friend's lives. This is hard sometimes when the answer is long in coming, but when we truly give our problems to God , He provides peace and strength to endure the wait.

Rich Morgan
Rich Morgan I agree we are all works in progress, but waiting from your anointing for 15-20 years to taking the crown is a long long time!  Maybe it is ok in retrospect but to live all that time, waiting, must be very hard.  When I talk about waiting on the Lord, I am prepared to go as long as a few months, maybe a year!

Kay Rushin
Kay Rushin LOL...we in the we want it now world. 480 years old If Noah was  480 years old  when God told him to build an Ark and 600 when the Flood came, it is reasonable to assume that the construction of the Ark took place during this 120 year period (See Gen. 6 :3 along with I Pet. 3:20).

Sylvia Todd
Sylvia Todd Haha, Rich, maybe it's because you're envisioning a scenario in which a person is just standing still and doing nothing for those years...that would be boring indeed! In the case of David there, he was on the move, being prepared, literally on the run ;)!

Dion Todd
Dion Todd At twenty, I was on fire for the Lord and He told me to prepare for ministry. I did and got my degree. Then I waited until I was forty-five before that came to pass. I can tell you that He is no hurry and will thoroughly prepare you, but what He promised will come to pass.

Sylvia Froese
Sylvia Froese yes it does feel like this desert walk is a long time. thank you for the encouragement pastor Dion. In comparison to King David's time of 15-20 years from calling until fulfillment, my 2 years of waiting is not so long at all. It's like if I don't get confirmation every month or so, I lose faith in the calling and think...did I make it all up in my head? was it real what I heard and felt? But I remember it being such a strong calling. where did my faith go? Just need to look at the highlights of my life to see that it is a calling that will take a long time to fulfill.... in the Lord's time. It is so hard to know which path to take to get to that calling sometimes. sometimes it is all too quiet, the voice of God. I read your devo on God's voice being quiet sometimes. it helps to know that others have felt that way too. Thanks again pastor Dion.

Kay Rushin
Kay Rushin I think it is about prespective, we probably all feel like we are waiting on something! You talked about a fix income, better then "no income", kids, blessed, "you are a mother". Worried, about the kids because you want them to know God like you. So now imagine how God feels about us. Everybody mission is not some great thing. It could be simple things, you getting closer with God and praying for your kids is major. I know when you focus on God all things are possible.Be encourged

Patricia Walker I didn't have a moment to read this ~ until just now (4:00 P.M. my time zone) I had a job interview today & was busy getting prepared for it.  So having read this now, I know that I will get the job that the Lord has in mind for me ~ maybe not the one I went to today, but I know that I will get the one He wants me to have.  And Yes, it has been a Long Road indeed......but I continue to pray and know in my heart He will answer!!

Deleted Member Yes, many times we aren't sure of what we might be waiting for, because we have so many blessings, but I know how it is to struggle with finances. I will be praying that God will send you an increase of what you need and that your children will come to Him. I pray for the things that trouble your heart, that you will receive a peace and calmness. I know sometimes it seems like we too, have been on that Long Road, but always knowing Jesus is right there for you and He will walk with you every step of the way and carry you if He has to. He loves you so much. God Bless you:):):)

Nell Neathery From my birth town of Rayville, LA, to my hometown of Minden, LA where I graduated from high school 40 years ago this month,  to where I married, had my daughters and worked in Shreveport, LA, to Jackson, Mississippi where my husband passed away, to Houston, Texas, to back home in Louisiana, and now I am with the Lord more than I ever have been in Henderson, TX.  At 58 years of age, looking back at where I have been with writing this, it doesn't seem like a long road compared to how long I will have eternity in Heaven!  Thanks for the message.  :-)

Cheryl Hepler I remember years ago while I was waiting on something major to change God was saying ....While you are waiting go do this.  I did more and more.  Nice things were given even in ministry that were all about doing while waiting.  It got full the days and still are but different.  I thought of it like when driving and stopped at a red lite I would file my nails a little and that quick the lite changed.  Just doing something while waiting

Lesa M. Merrill Oh, do I ever need to hear this today!!  Thank you!!  It is SO hard to wait and stay strong when others are poking and proding me.  I place everything is God's hands, and then I cave and give in to the pressure of one person who is not open to wait with me for His divine timing.  I need strength and pray for his salvation and relationship with Christ!!!
