But in their distress they turned to the LORD, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he was found by them. 2 Chronicles 15:3 NIV
We were happily driving towards our destination when I felt the car gradually getting lower on one side and the steering became sluggish. I pulled over to the side of the road, got out, and sure enough we had a flat tire. It was the first time that I had thought of the spare tire in a long time. It is one of those things that you tend to forget about until you need it. Fortunately the spare was fine and soon I had it changed and we were on the road again.
Israel would backslide away from God and then when in distress, turn back to Him and cry. God would forgive them and once things began to go well for them, they would slide away again. Sometimes when things are going well for us, we tend to forget about God. We treat Him like a spare tire that is there when we need Him, but mostly forget Him.
Jesus said, Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven (Matt 7:21). Many will profess to know Jesus but will not submit to His leadership and one day He will separate the sheep from the goats (Matt 25:33).
Today counts. Dont pray to the Lord only when you are in distress. Involve the Lord in your life every day and build that relationship, especially when things are going well for you. When you have ignored Him for three years, He may still answer you, but you rob yourself of the greatest experience available on earth by treating God Almighty like a spare tire.
