Good Neighbors from Refreshing Hope Ministries on Vimeo. Today I want to talk about the importance of being a good neighbor. Ever since Adam and Eve had kids and one killed the other, it has been an ongoing thing, learning to live with one another. Most of the ten commandments are about how we tr...

When I kept silence, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me. My strength was sapped in the heat of summer. Selah. The Gentle Whisper

  • He said, 'Go out, and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.' Behold, Yahweh passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before Yahweh; but Yahweh was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake; but Yahweh was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire passed; but Yahweh was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a still small voice. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle, went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, a voice came to him, and said, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?' 1Kings 19:11 WEB

Elijah was a seasoned prophet that knew the voice of God. When he was told to go and stand before God on the mountain, he remained inside the cave until he knew that the Lord was there.

Elijah ignored the tornado or strong wind that came by. He ignored the earthquake that shook the mountains. He ignored the fire that passed by. Finally, he heard the sound of a low whisper and He knew that it was indeed God Almighty speaking. Elijah arose and went out to meet Him.

The still small voice was a gentle whisper. The soft voice of God that speaks to your conscience and illuminates your mind. We are meant to hear His voice. That was His original plan, that each person listened to the Voice of God and obeyed, but in Exodus 20:19 the people were afraid and said 'Do not let God speak to us, let Him speak to you.'

Jesus said 'My sheep hear My voice' (John 10:27). Hearing the whisper yourself changes things and will give you an edge that no one can take away.

Often when the Lord speaks to us, it is easily drowned out by our busy lives and He does not shout over the noise. I find that I have to get quiet so that I can listen. This includes an inner calmness, a place of rest, so that you can hear Him. A quiet room is nice, but if your life is in turmoil there will be noise in your head. I have been there and done that. You have to fix what is wrong.

Many times we are looking for the supernatural and His word often comes to us in such a natural way that we miss it. We expect a booming voice from God, but instead we hear the words of a mentor or friend or a song come to our mind. Maybe something they once told us in the past. That is the Holy Spirit whispering to you.

Listen for the voice of the Lord always and try to be sensitive to the Spirit. That gentle whisper will make all the difference and can turn disaster and terror into peace and joy.

Prayer: Father, teach me to hear Your voice and recognize when You are speaking. Help me make the right decisions and guide my steps today. Speak to me and through me Lord, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

David and Dianna Wyles
David and Dianna Wyles Amen! Yes! When I can truly quiet those inner demons and just be still, knowing he is God, I can hear that quiet whisper nudging me to follow where he leads! Today is a better day with more hope in my heart:) I am sorry for my ramblings and rantings yesterday and thank you to anyone who prayed or sent me scripture and encouragement. My husband saw the need for me to escape my ruminating thoughts and took me on a drive into nature :) I can always quiet those demons down and better listen to God in nature. Part of the problem is I ran out of hormones and getting them back to normal levels can be emotionally taxing. When I get out of balance hormonally, it knocks me out of balance emotionally too and even though I can recognise it I can't always redirect it untill the hormones level out some... it took 5 days back on the hormones to feel better today, although I am equally sure the nature trip is what helped me feel at peace the most so I could reboot and recharge. Thanks again to all who prayed and encouraged me. Pastor's Prayer: Father, teach me to hear Your voice and recognize when You are speaking. Help me make the right decisions and guide my steps today. Speak to me and through me Lord, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Kath Paro Amen and hallelujah on getting spiritually and emotionally recentered.  I know personally the experience of having those out of balance.  It took me 3 months to regain that feeling of peace and serenity a year ago.  I applaud you for being able to get your reboot so quickly.  God bless you and may your balance remain with you for a long time!

Kath Paro Dion~ This speaks to me to think, have we listened to the whisper of God in our bringing Lonni into our home?  Was it our egos guiding us or God?  I deeply believe we are doing what God has directed us to do.  I feel the inner peace and joy at doing what's right.  God is guiding my walk and I am listening willingly. In the glory of God'sname, amen!

Karen Pasquinelli
Karen Pasquinelli Jay, I have thought that same thing in the past, but have come to realize that God can speak to me with a thought that comes to my mind, or someone may say something to me that I needed to hear.  I have never heard God literaly speak to me like Elijah did, I don't know anyone that has.  When I read the word of God there are times I go "WOW" that's what that means, and I believe that is when God is also speaking to me.  I sure hope this helps you.  I read God's word every morning before I go about my day and thru out the day I may even talk to God silently.   I hope what I am saying helps you Jay.

Pastor Marty Pena
Pastor Marty Pena Thank you Pastor Todd for delivering a vital message to all believers the main person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit. I pray today that many will learn to listen to that small still voice through their prayer life, and the Word of God so that they will be led by the Spirit as they walk with the Spirit. He lives in us and is everywhere. 2 Corinthians 3:17 "Now the Lord is that Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."

Chris Dibbern
Chris Dibbern Recently, I had been wondering whether the Lord would speak so I could hear while I was out and about. Scriptures about prophets speaking by the Spirit to large gatherings of people came to mind, and I thought, how does that work? Especially given that I'm a somewhat anxious person (I used to be painfully shy, but nowadays... He's really tempered that). I wondered, how can you know it's Him above the noise? Then, unexpectedly, as I was arriving at a large Easter gathering at my aunt and uncle's home, with all the noise and greetings and dogs and people, I heard Him. He spoke nothing big, just a simple affirmation that I needed. And now I know. :-) The voice was still, and small, yet utterly distinct. I don't know how to explain it. It was like the entire room whispered--not the people, but the space, gentle and quiet--so the loudness of everything around didn't matter.

Carol Pady
Carol Pady Amen! His voice is so subtle that when you first hear it , you are unsure of it. You think it may just be your own conscience or your own thoughts. As you desire to know Him better He gives you the ability to discern His voice. I hear Him more clearly now and when I obey His requests immediately, I have doors open and prayers answered.

Twila Stierwalt
Twila Stierwalt I know the Holy Spirit lives within me, and speaks to me through thoughts and through Gods word, and through others. God knows my heart, and knows my thoughts so I can trust Him with guiding me in my life, my conversation and in my service for Him. When I worry about something, God tells me to not worry, but to trust Him. He says don't worry about tomorrow because today has enough troubles of its own. Only Jesus can calm our soul and give us real joy, no matter what our circumstances are. Be still and know that I am God. The Holy Spirit is with me always, I can get so busy doing my own thing that I for get that He is active working in me. Thank God He is faithful and never leaves me.

Tyler Velau
Tyler Velau Thank you, Pastor Todd for this wonderful devotional. But it does lead to questions and concerns. It is quite difficult for some to hear the voice of the Lord or recognize it to be His voice. I tend not to trust strange voices and if I were to hear them in my head I may seek psychiatric help. So, how exactly do we hear the Lord when He speaks to us, and how do we know it is Him speaking?
