Standing in The Gap

  • I sought for a man among them, who should build up the wall, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found none. Ezekiel 22:30 WEB

When the Lord planned to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 18:24), Abraham stood in the gap and asked God if He would destroy it if there were fifty righteous men there. God said that He would not.

Then Abraham asked what if there were forty-five righteous people, forty, thirty, twenty, ten, and then he stopped. It appears that God would have kept going as long as He had someone to intercede for them. Abraham was the one that stopped at ten.

God seeks intercessors that will pray for the nation, and for each other. If you have someone who is lost, do not stop praying for them. Jesus told us 'No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up in the last day' (John 6:44). Pray for the Lord to draw their hearts to Him.

Remember also to pray for the nation that you live in. You live there, and if it prospers, you will prosper. 'Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to Yahweh for it; for in the peace of it shall you have peace' (Jeremiah 29:7).

If you know the Lord today, chances are that someone has stood in the gap for you already. Now your prayer could be the one thing that changes everything for someone else. God is still seeking those who will stand in the gap for others.

Prayer: Father, I thank You for saving me, now please draw the rest of my family to You. May my whole family come to know and love you for all things are possible with You. Put the lost in my path and the words in my mouth, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Sylvia Schmidt
Sylvia Schmidtedited: January 29, 2016 I understand the idea of standing in the gap. I have a friend who is on the fence about being a Christian. I have needed her as a friend and lately she has been talking to me about God. She knows that hearing about God makes me feel better. But I am also hoping that by her talking about God that she will come to know our Lord Jesus Christ as her own personal savior too. I pray that she continues to talk about God. She is sounding more comfortable about it so it will just take some time I think. It is exciting. I know I have stood in the gap before and prayed for her to be in relatinoship with God before when she has had struggles in life. Thank you for this reminder to pray for others. We could be the only ones who are praying for something like this for that person. Amen.  I also remember hearing after my divorce from my sister-in-law who had prayed that I have a close relationship with God. When I told her a few years ago how my relationship had changed, she was really happy and had told me how she had prayed for me. It truly does happen that we find Christ when others stand in the gap.

Sylvia Schmidt So true Carol! I totally agree! I see so many little changes happen to people when I pray for them to find Christ. My friend only recently started to talk about God to me. I wonder how she will be in a few months. It is so cool how God moves!

Melissa-Peter Busse
Melissa-Peter Busse Thank you for this message today.  I know that my mom and grandma prayed for me for years and many years later I am now praying for my own children and others I love. I do feel discouraged at times and I'm sure my mom felt the same way. Your message has given me hope and encourages me to keep praying for those who are lost and have turned away from the Lord.

Lissy Verghese
Lissy Verghese Thank you dear Pastor, for the great message! Even I wish to stand as a wall for my country, dear India. When riots rage here and people kill each other in the name of religion, I truly feel sad...and this is the exact thing I am trying to do; through my presence on social media and in my prayers, to be the voice of nationality. I declare myself to be an Indian Christian who loves our Government, our army, our culture and our diversity.
