Yahweh said to Gideon, "I will save you by the three hundred men who lapped, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, each to his own place." So the people took food in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the rest of the men of Israel to their own tents, but retained the three hundred men; and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley. Judges 7:7'8 WEB.Gideon started his epic journey with over 32,000 men, but the Lord told him to send the fearful home, and twenty-two thousand of them left! Then the Lord pruned his army back even more until only three hundred remained. So Gideon now stood there with three hundred men facing an enemy army of over 135,000.
Gideon was afraid, but he followed God one command at a time. It was a crazy plan. They were going to sneak up on a giant enemy army at night while they slept. Then, they would blow trumpets and wave torches to surprise them, but what were they supposed to do after they woke them up?
It worked! When they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars to reveal the torches, the enemy panicked and started killing each other in confusion. They scattered from the battlefield, broken and defeated. Then, other Israelites joined Gideon and the three hundred. They pursued the Midian army and destroyed them and their kings. Because of this victory, the land had peace for the next forty years.
When God is on your side, it's not how much of something you have that will determine the outcome. When Gideon awoke the giant sleeping army, they could have easily turned and killed him. God fought the battle, but He gave Gideon the victory. You only have to follow Him one step at a time to overcome. Just don't stop or turn back in fear. Keep putting one foot in front of the other one, and you will come out of this a winner.
