He said, "Come!" Peter stepped down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" Matthew 14:29'31 WEB.The wind suddenly grew stronger as Peter walked across the surface of the water. Fear came over him, and he started to panic. Then the water beneath his feet began to soften, and he sank into the sea.
A few minutes before, Peter had cheerfully walked across the top of the water. The other disciples had watched Peter and Jesus from the boat. Now he was sinking in panic, and the others murmured, "We told you so..." Then Peter cried out: "Lord, save me!" And Jesus reached out and took hold of him.
When they got back into the boat, Jesus asked Peter one question: "Why did you doubt?" Peter had stepped out in faith to go to the Lord Jesus, and everything was working just as it should. But of course, when on the edge of a major breakthrough, a life-changing event, the wind began to blow furiously in opposition. Peter's faith that he could do this wavered.
Peter began to doubt the Lord told him to do this at all. He began to panic, and thoughts ran madly through his mind: "What was I thinking? This is ridiculous! What am I doing out here? I can't do this! I am going to drown!" All these things rushed through Peter's mind and gained momentum. That is when Peter began to sink. Yet, even when his faith failed him, Jesus didn't let him drown.
Fear is a spirit that will try and turn you back from what the Lord has for you. Fear is the guardian of the good stuff. You will have to get past it to get the treasure. Scripture tells us:
"For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control" (2 Timothy 1:7 WEB).
When you step out in faith and are on the edge of a major breakthrough, it seems like all hell will break loose against you. Yet, don't give up and give into panic. Only believe. God's plan for you hasn't changed. He is still calling you to come forth. God is always calling us into our future. If we could do it ourselves, then we wouldn't need Him.
"I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13). That includes the things you face today.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank You this day for allowing me to serve You. Please forgive me for being fearful and listening to the voice of the enemy. If You are for me, who can stand against me? How could I doubt You, the Almighty God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, the Maker of the stars? Please fill my life with Your presence, strengthen me, and let me see the world through Your eyes. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!Note: 'Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God.'
