Set a watch, Yahweh, before my mouth. Keep the door of my lips. Psalms 141:3 WEB.David prayed that the Lord would set a guard over his mouth to keep him from saying things that he should not. James said, "If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well" (James 3:3). If you can control your tongue, then you can control the rest of your body. Then James warned us that blessing and cursing should not flow out of the same source.
In the Old Testament (Numbers 14:28), the Lord said, "What I have heard you say, I will do to you." In the New Testament (Matthew 12:36), Jesus said: "I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words, you will be condemned."
So we have a continuing pattern through scripture: The words that come out of your mouth directly affect your life and circumstances. It was covered in the Old Testament, and it continues through the New Testament.
A mentor of mine used to say: "Words unspoken, you are their master. Words once spoken, you are their slave."
Do not speak negative things over your life, your family, or those around you. Say good things about them, or say learn to say nothing at all. Stay positive in your speech. When you are speaking today, listen to the words that you are saying. Like David, pray that God sets a guard over your mouth and that He makes you aware of your speech.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I pray that You set a guard over my lips and let me hear what comes out of my mouth. Please forgive me for the things that I have said wrong and cleanse my heart. For out of the abundance of my heart, my mouth speaks. Help me be a positive influence on those around me today. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!Note: 'Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God.'
