Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree," that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, saying, "Ha! What do we have to do with you, Jesus, you Nazarene? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are: the Holy One of God!" Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!" The unclea...

Something from Nothing

  • But, lest we cause them to stumble, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up. When you have opened its mouth, you will find a stater coin. Take that, and give it to them for me and you. Matthew 17:27 WEB

When Jesus and Peter returned home to Capernaum, the tax collectors asked Peter for the temple tax, which all Israelites over 20 years of age had to pay annually. They began collecting this tax about a month before Passover and they used this two drachma tax to pay for the repairs and maintenance of the temple in Jerusalem.

Apparently Peter and Jesus did not have that much money with them. So Jesus told Peter to go fishing, and that the first fish that he would catch would have a silver stater coin in its mouth, which was equal to four drachmas. He could use that coin to pay the temple tax for them both.

What are the chances of that happening? I grew up fishing and never caught one like that. Yet once when I was out of work for a season, I really needed two-hundred-fifty dollars to pay a bill and had no way to get it. After I went to church that Sunday, I found an envelope tucked into my Bible. When I opened it, there were two one-hundred dollar bills and a fifty inside. I still do not know for sure who did it, but they certainly heard from the Lord that time.

We like to be self sustaining, and to have to depend on others is a struggle. It is certainly more blessed to be able to give, than to have to receive. But when you find that you have to depend on God, you will find that He is more than enough. So today if you find yourself in a tight spot, know that He is able to help you. Don't give up. God Almighty is able to bring something, from nothing.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You know my needs before I even ask, and You know the things that I am facing. Please provide for me and boost my faith along the way, in the name of Jesus I pray. Amen!

Note: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." (2 Chron 7:14) ~ If you have a prayer need, we are here for you! We and the prayer team are ready to lift you up at our private prayer page: RHM Prayer Network

Thank you Pastor for this devotional, it reminded me of a time I was in need and our Lord lead a friend to us with the help we were in need of, what a gracious God we have. Thank you once again, God bless you and Sylvia.
