RHM Devotional: The Chain of Command from Refreshing Hope Ministries on Vimeo. Today I want to talk about the chain of command in the Kingdom of God. When we began RHM, I was blown away by some of the prayer requests that we received. Many people confused God with Santa Claus. I remember one in p...

David therefore departed there, and escaped to the cave of Adullam: and when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him. Everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented, gathered themselves to him; and he became captain...

Worship Team Blues

  • I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love, being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:1 WEB

As he sat on the front row, I could see from the look on his face that we were making a lasting impression on the guest speaker at our church. Some of the praise and worship team was arguing loudly with the sound team about the monitor mix, while the evangelist sat on the front row and looked on in puzzled amazement. As I slowly sank down behind my keyboard, the Holy Spirit quietly left the building.

That was one of the driest services that I have ever sat through. I felt sorry for the speaker as he labored to bring his message later. The praise team should have ushered in the Spirit of God and set the atmosphere, but we were too busy fighting amongst ourselves to notice that He had left. It turns out that our attitude mattered more to Him, than the chords that we played.

God does not like it when His children argue, and He wants us to live in unity and peace with one another (Psalm 133:1). Paul said 'Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?' (1 Corinthians 6:7) and 'Do not grieve the Holy Spirit' (Ephesians 4:30). We certainly grieved Him that day. When someone else is having a bad day, it does not give us the freedom to mirror them, and it always takes two or more to argue.

It is easy to get offended in church, and then nurse those hurts like a dear old friend. Eventually everything that person does or says becomes negative to you, and it begins to poison your spiritual life. Then a simple word can cause an explosion as the volcano of bitterness finally erupts.

Strive to maintain the peace. Learn to bite your tongue and keep your thoughts to yourself. Don't be so important in your own eyes that you cannot overlook another's shortcoming or failing. Don't let a small thing, become a big thing. It is not about Me, Myself, and I, but about us, as we all make up the body of Christ. Can we not just get along?

Prayer: Heavenly Father please help me shake off the hurts, rejections and offenses that I encounter. Deliver me from the negativity and cleanse me from any bitterness in my life. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Note: "I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer" (Psalm 17:6) If you have a prayer need, we are here for you! We and the prayer team are ready to lift you up at our private prayer page: RHM Prayer Network

Amen and Amen!!!! This devotional took me down memory lane, I too have seen the same happen in the praise and worship group at a church I attended and served with, only takes a couple to sour everything. I have since forgiven all that, but had to move on as it was not going to change anytime soon. Since that time most of the members of the team have moved on as well. The Pastor contacted me about coming and playing again but I was already serving with RHM and recording music with Pastor Dion. That was a very painful time in my life, I have forgiven it but cant not remember it. Stuff happens we are after all human, and sometimes certain folks just arent compatible, but serving God you should be able to leave your ego at the door. Its hard for some, but myself I am glad I found RHM and Pastor Dion and Sylvia! :)

I know that had to be rough, Perry, we feel your pain <3! I really don't think that people in worship teams are actually worse than anyone else, but perhaps because groups like that spend more time with each other, and have to come in for rehearsals at times when maybe they'd already had a long day at work, and have to come in early to set up when maybe they're not morning people. There are just more opportunities to see the worst that we have to offer than those who just swing in on a Sunday morning for a hour or so ;). Much love to you and Karen, and hope y'all had a fabulous Thanksgiving :)!

Amen and Amen! May this be my prayer as well, Pastor Dion! This is a battle that we fight daily, a quick tongue which creates so much hurt and pain, careless words spoken that cannot be undone or taken back just like leaves in the wind. We must control ourselves, our attitudes and what comes out of our mouths to allow the Hl. Spirit to work in us. Oh Lord, my God, I need Your help especially in this area,  in the name of Jesus I ask and pray, Amen!

This is an awesome message and we all need to hear this to help us remember what our focus should be. We all too many times make the service about ourselves with it needs to be just about worshipping our Lord and Savior!!! Thank you Pastor Dion!
