From The Inside Out

  • When they had come, he looked at Eliab, and said, 'Surely Yahweh's anointed is before him.' But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Don't look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don't see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.' 1 Samuel 16:6 WEB

When Saul was chosen to be the king of Israel, he was the most handsome, and the tallest man in the land (1Samuel 9:2). He was exactly what the people wanted. Yet despite these "assets", when the Lord told him to destroy the Amalekites, he was afraid of the people and disobeyed the Lord (1Samuel 15:24). Saul looked strong on the outside, but he was weak within. Your gifting may take you further than your character can sustain you.

God then chose a new person to replace Saul as king. He told Samuel to go to Bethlehem and anoint him. When Samuel arrived there and saw Jesse's son Eliab standing tall and strong, he was ready to anoint him, but the Lord told him 'This is not the one.' Seven of Jesse's sons passed before Samuel and the Lord said no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

Finally the line of would-be kings reached the end. Samuel was confused and asked Jesse if these were all of his sons. Jesse reluctantly admitted that the youngest one was tending the sheep. The word that Jesse used for David was the same word that we use for 'Runt" meaning insignificant, lesser, or small. Samuel told Jesse to bring him and when little David walked up, the Lord said, 'This is the one. Anoint him.'

We see people from the outside in and often judge them by their attractiveness, talent, or wealth. God sees us from the inside out. Who you are when no one is looking is who you really are. The unseen things that you do, are seen by the only One who matters, so make it count.

David, the little shepherd boy, was anointed by Samuel and went on to become a great king. God saw more inside of David than anyone else did for God knows the heart. Though you may be the least and not in a position of power yet, though you take care of smelly things that others are too good to do, God sees you and there will be a reward.

Prayer: Heavenly Father I thank You for waking me up today. Please comfort me today and let me know that You are there. Quicken Your word to me and let me understand it in a clear way. I want to experience more of You in my life, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

This is so good and such a great reminder that God sees all. I am not bragging, but there are things I do, many times a day, a week or even in a month that only God sees. Things I do automatcally like helping someone, offering a cart in the grocery store, or helping a disabled woman reach something on the shelf, sometimes, it is a smile to some disabled person or older person whom is trying so hard to get across the way. I do my best to be who I am at home and when I am out. THat is not to say this in a bragging way at all. I have my moments where my pain is so crushing that I have all I can do not to bite my tounge, but I hold myslef up as best I can to reach out and help another. I remind myslef often that God sees all, when I am in pain, and when I can fly like an eagle. I have tried over the many years of my walk with the Lord to become more like him, although I fail many times. But I know God is pleased with my efforts to be more like him and that keeps me going. Your prayer Pastor is spot on, "Please comfort me today and let me know that You are there" and Quicken Your word to me and let me understand it in a clear way. That is important to me, that I understand,. Thankyou for your daily devotioanls and your faithfulness to posting them.

This really hit home for me today. I had a good job that I really enjoyed. I worked through a staffing agency for 9 months. I finally had 2 interviews and was told in December that the company had hired me full time. I was SO EXCITED! But when my background check came back it showed that I had pled guilty to felony possession of a controlled substance a year prior. So I was called to human resources and was asked to explain the situation. I was open and honest and advised that I never tried to hide it, I had listed it on the application as well as the application of the staffing agency that I had been working through for 9 months at this company. The HR manager said he would need to discuss this with the company's general manager, and would have to retract the job offer until then. 3 days later I was sent home and was advised that they were ending my assignment. I was CRUSHED. Thanks for your your 9 months of hard work, merry Christmas. My family's income was cut in half and I had to take our child out of daycare. I struggled for some time sitting home changing "smelly" diapers and feeling frustrated trying to potty train a 3 year old while my husband is out working. But I have a lot more time now to study God's Word and I know that He had a reason for me to NOT GET THAT JOB. Now I'm trying to figure out exactly what He wants me to do next. Stay home, go to school, find another job. But today's message reminded me that I am not "less" for being home wiping a poopy rear instead of out making money. When He closes one door He opens another.

I've been saying for some time now to always look at a persons heart. That will tell you a lot more about a person then just going by looks, money and other unreal reasons. Amen <3

Thanks Pastor Dion for your daily devotion. :-)
