The Master Carpenter

  • See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity! Psalms 133:1 WEB

Wood, I grew up around it. Often I was carrying it, sawing it, nailing it, or pulling the splinters from my hands. My dad was a carpenter for fifty-five years, so I grew up with woodworking and I have always enjoyed building things. I find that is a valuable skill in our life everyday and, I am thankful for those years that I spent working with him.

He always started the project by picking the right lumber. Dad would go through the whole pile to find one piece that was straight. Then he would take that piece and cut it to the perfect size, fit it into place, nail it down and then smooth the rough edges out with sandpaper. The end result would be beautiful.

The Lord Jesus uses a lot of these same skills that He learned on us. His dad Joseph was a carpenter as well. God will search through thousands of people until He finds the right one. Then He will draw you to Himself (John 6:44), cut away your past baggage (2 Corinthians 5:17), fit you into your place in the body (Colossians 3:15), nail you to your own cross (Galatians 5:24), and then He breaks out the sandpaper. The first part of being drawn to Him is pleasant, much of the rest is not, especially the cutting, nailing and the sanding.

To accomplish this, He will often place people into our lives that we need to help shape and smooth us. We hate those irritating people and would like to avoid the friction and the scraping, but we also cannot see our own rough edges on our own. It is natural to want to separate from the friction, but if you do you will retain the roughness that God is trying to smooth out, and He will bring coarser sandpaper next time. You can and will get through this, and when He is done you are going to be one smooth work of art, hand crafted by the Master Carpenter.

Prayer: Heavenly Father I pray that You give me the grace to endure the things that I face. Help me love those around me and be nice. Please set a guard over my mouth and help me reflect You in a positive light, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Amen! In the book of Hebrews, the Bible talks about disapline. It says that disapline is not fun while we are going through it. But unless we go through the process, we will not enter into the kingdom God is putting together in the place we were ment to be. Father, have your perfect work in me!

Amen! Sandpaper people, that rub us wrong, are used by our Father to refine us, smooth out the rough edges and bring out the beautiful finish. We need to just allow Him to do it and accept the refining graciously, knowing He is perfecting us, making us into a much better representation of Jesus.

So that is what’s happening. I started walking with the Lord ( Surrender and seeking His will in my life) about 3 years ago. I have often found myself in this past year or so looking back to that first summer of sweet Surrender. I felt so close, and it was much pleasant than it has been. I was just telling a friend of mine this week that I’m in the “refining fire”. It’s not so great. After talking with her, I have decided to praise Him in the midst of the flames and sand paper.

Thanks for your confirmation and words of encouragement

I've always thought how ironic it was that Jesus, a carpenter Himself, had to die on a woden cross.Imagine how He felt!

I always avoid conflict and stay away from it.  I learn from this devotion today, to allow people who are irritating to come to our lives too.  So that we will know how they perceive our own rough edges.  Praise and thank you LORD GOD for allowing people to come into my life, good or bad, that you send to refine me and when we get all through these then We will be a good, smooth wood handcrafted by GOD.

Amen Pastor Dion, may this be my prayer as well! And thank you for this message, i needed to hear this today, I've a real problem with my mouth and out it comes and you cannot take them back. Those words are like leaves in the wind. And I need the power of the Hl. Spirit to let me know when to talk and when to be silent. I really like your story as it relates to me that I'm like this rough piece of wood that needs a lot of sanding down, He does all of this because He loves me, thank you Lord!

I agree, Liesel! The same thing can happen to me at times. Then I sit and wish I never said what I did. It's like tossing a plate onto the floor and picking up the pieces and trying to put it back together. It will never be the same. Jesus, i'm asking you to help me think before I say anything it happen many times in my life. Jesus, I need your help keeping me quiet and not speaking unless it's something of good. In Jesus, name Amen <3 Love You, Liesel and I will pray for you so you to will be able to not speak until you know it's the right time and thing to say. Amen ***hugs*** <3

Pastor Dion, Your message today was so special today. I have been going through so many trials since my husband died last May. I think that our Father has been seeing if I can meet all of the trials that he has set before me with strength and grace. It has been so hard, but I have not cried and have been strong and done well. At least I thought I did. It has been a very rough patch for me and I know that I would have not made it without the love of The Father and my Savior Jesus Christ. Also, my family was there for me too. I was like a rough piece of wood that needed a whole lot of sanding and I don’t know when He is going to be through, but I will be able to make it with the help of the Father and Jesus and the guard that he put’s over my mouth!!! I need that most of all sometimes.

Thank you most of all Pastor Dion. You messages everyday are what gets me through also.

Yours in Christ,

Linda Rogers, Huntsville, AL
