RHM Devotional: Teach a Man to Fish from Refreshing Hope Ministries on Vimeo. Today I want to talk about listening to the Holy Spirit, instead of relying on someone else to tell you what He said you should do. We need to get to a place in our walk where we can discern what the Holy Spirit is tryi...

One of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him. 'Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?' Jesus said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. A second likewise is...

The Master of the Storm

  • And as they sailed He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke Him, saying, Master, Master, we are perishing! And He awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, Where is your faith? Luke 8:23-25 ESV

Who is going to tell Him? They had put it off as long as possible, but now the water was getting pretty deep inside the boat and someone had to wake Jesus up. It is not easy to ask for help, especially for men, but when they began to sink, they worked that out.

Earlier the ministry group had set sail across the lake in their fishing boat, and Jesus fell asleep. The disciples were navigating the boat all by themselves. After all, some of them were fishermen and they knew all about boats. Peter and the others probably felt pretty good about this and thought that they had it all under control, nothing but smooth sailing ahead. They probably though, "No problem, we have done this a thousand times."

Suddenly, a storm came up and the boat began filling with water. The group was in great danger and began to panic, but Jesus slept on. Finally they awoke Jesus with, Master we are perishing! and He calmed the storm for them. Will Jesus let you struggle against a storm in your own strength? Apparently so, but they only needed to ask for His help to change the situation. James said, You do not have, because you do not ask." (James 4:2)

If a storm is raging in your life and your faith is not strong enough to stop it: call on Jesus, The Master of the Storm. Do not assume that He will step in and calm everything without you inviting Him in. Jesus said, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in" (Revelation 3:20). He does not beat down your door, but if you ask, He just may help you today. Worry about it, or pray about it and let God help you.

Twila Stierwalt I do not know why it is so hard to just ask. Jesus is just waiting for us to trust Him. I guess we just think we can do it our self, but it never works. This was such a good devotion.

Albert Chau In this case, Jesus actually called off the storm miraculously. He can do it if He wishes, but most of the time, I think He's taking us through the storms of life. Jesus please help us to go through storms of our lives and still have our faith intact in You.

Susan Helms
Susan Helms You know - a lot of people go on their merry way thinking everything is OK and don't anticipate a storm may be brewing - like the disciples.  I am guilty of that myself.  But as soon as the storm hits -- we get on our knees and beg God to save us.  I try to remember that today may be the day He calls me home and not take anything for granted.  This devotional today really speaks volumes to me and my complacency sometimes.  Thank you Jesus that no matter the storm, You will be there thru it all.

Kathy Banfield
Kathy Banfield I am living, breathing PROOF that Jesus (and Mary) will never leave or abandon us, and the past 24 hours could have been devastating for me if not for my heavenly family! Too much happened; I simply cannot explain it all here. But, because I trust and believe, God was with me and also sent a few angels to my aid! THANK YOU LORD! Blessings to you too, Pastor Todd, for reminding me and directing me on the right path! Love, Kathy

Rachel Bueno
Rachel Bueno Amazing how this message has made me think. I am so gilty about no asking for myself.  I will pray for anybody, people I don't even know and believe that my prayer is being heard but don't pray for myself. I have gotten better about praying for myself but feel others need it more. Thank you for the reminder that prayer is so powerful I need to pray for me.

Nell Neathery
Nell Neathery I read and commented on this devotional yesterday.  Before reading today's devotional, I saw yesterday's title, and that reminded me of the song:  "He's the Master of the Sea!"  God has shown me so much since I became an independent Christian when my husband passed in 2008, mainly through circumstances.  I vowed a few weeks ago and have done so this week to make my life and relationship with God simple.  I accepted the word "Joy" as a focus.  I had a turning point in 2012 by receiving the Holy Spirit, and I have had a turning point in 2015, including my membership here with Refreshing Hope Ministries.  Keeping it simple with hope, faith, love and JOY!

Mayra Prado
Mayra Prado I recently read a saying that I love:  "When God pushes you to the edge trust Him fully because only two things can happen.  Either He will catch you when you fall or He will teach you how to fly. (unknown)"  Challenging times are not easy times but they are moments when great growth happens.  My prayers are with you.
