Twenty Pieces of Silver

  • Judah said to his brothers, 'What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? Come, and let's sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh.' His brothers listened to him. Midianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. They brought Joseph into Egypt. Genesis 37:26 WEB

Very few of us had brothers as bad as Joseph did. They became so jealous over him, his dreams, and his coat of many colors, that one day when he came to them alone, they decided to kill him. 'Come now therefore, and let's kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, 'An evil animal has devoured him.' We will see what will become of his dreams' (Genesis 37:20). With family like that, you don't need enemies.

Reuben, the eldest brother, wanted to rescue Joseph. At first, they compromised by throwing Joseph into a cistern, and then they sat down and ate lunch. While they were eating their meal, and Joseph was scared and alone in a hole in the ground, a group of traders came by heading for Egypt. When Judah saw them, he had an epiphany and said 'Hey let's sell him! We will make nothing by killing him. After all, he is our own brother.'

So they sold Joseph for twenty pieces of silver, dipped his coat of many colors in goat blood, and brought it to his father, who had once used a goat to deceive his own father (Genesis 27:16). They asked him 'Is this your son's coat?' They did not even use his name or call him their brother (Genesis 37:32).

Joseph was then carried to Egypt by the traders and sold to Potiphar, the captain of the guard. God was with him, he prospered, and soon Joseph was in charge of Potiphar's entire household.

Potiphar's wife became attracted to Joseph and tried to seduce him day after day, but he refused. Joseph basically told her 'There is only one thing in this house that I cannot have, and that is you.' Unlike Eve, Joseph did not see the one forbidden fruit as a point of frustration, and he left it alone.

As time passed, she grew weary of his rejection. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. She tried everything, but when Joseph would not give in and sleep with her, she finally accused him of trying to rape her, and he was thrown into prison.

God was with Joseph in prison (Genesis 39:21). Joseph prospered there and was soon taking care of the other prisoners. After some years passed, he was brought before Pharaoh and elevated to the second-in-command of Egypt.

Joseph had a dream, but after that he went down, down, down. Joseph went from a special son to a pit, from the pit to a slave, from a slave to a servant of prisoners, and then he was elevated to be ruler of Egypt. What a road to follow. Joseph was on the road to heaven, but it sometimes looked like hell.

If you would have seen Joseph trapped in a cistern, or as a slave, or as a prisoner, you would not have called him blessed, but yet he was. Joseph would have appeared to be forsaken by God, but He was with Joseph as a young man, in the cistern, while a slave, while a prisoner, and later while a leader.

Your circumstances do not separate you from God, for He is there to help you in the circumstance. Joseph was humbled and learned to be a responsible leader along the way. When the time came, God raised up the one that He had been preparing for many years.

Though your life may have taken a turn for the worse, it will actually work out for the better. Because you feel abandoned in a cistern, does not mean that He is not with you, or that you are not on the right path. Be patient while God works out the details. Stay sweet, stay loving, and be the greatest servant they ever met. Elevation time is coming.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank You for bringing me this far. Help me see this situation through Your eyes and keep the big picture in mind. This will not beat me for I know that You have plans for me. I will not die, but live and declare the goodness of God in the land of the living. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

I love the story of my namesake, our lives have been so similar, I know that Yah has plans for me and I know that He is preparing me. Let the will of Yah bade me to "walk the water." Heavenly Father, I thank You for bringing me this far. Help me see this situation through Your eyes and keep the big picture in mind. This will not beat me for I know that You have plans for me. I will not die, but live and declare the goodness of God in the land of the living. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen

Hi everyone! Sorry the website was down for a while. We had a hard drive that's been giving us a bit of trouble lately and it finally died. Dion replaced it with a backup, so we are...back :)! We appreciate your prayers and patience <3!

The webserver has an 8 drive RAID 6 which should keep on going even if a drive fails, but this time it did not. Last week it froze hard for no apparent reason. This morning it was frozen hard with hard drive 4 flashing orange, so at least we had an error to go on. The server is a 2009 Dell R900, but a real power house with 16 cores and a 128 GB of RAM. Hopefully this will resolve the issue. Be blessed everyone.

This devotional was exactly what I needed to hear.  A loved one wrongfully in prison, fighting for his freedom and last night my father passed away.  It has been a rough year, but I remain walking along the path towards the fruition of his plan.  I promise to stay strong, focused on God, and perservere knowing that there is a big picture that will present itself in his time.  <3

As someone who has felt that I have been stuck in a rut for years I can say thinking along those lines can cause more harm than good. In those situations, in those times, I think we have to take the leap of faith and place our trust and our worlds in God's loving, capable hands. It's not easy to do or to think of, but with God, all things are possible, its a matter of faith and a matter of trust. And I can think of no better place for our faith or our trust than the Lord. Even now, at this moment I am reminded of the difficulty of it, but I am certain that it is the right move. Deuteronomy 31:6-"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."

Proverbs 3:4-6-"So you will find favor and good repute In the sight of God and man. 5Trust in the LORD with all your heartAnd do not lean on your own understanding. 6In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.…"

Psalm 27:13-14-"I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living. 14Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD."

God works miracle for us in His own time. We just have to be patient and thanksful no matter what we're facing. Joseph never complained while he was in jail unfairly or being sold as a slave by his own brothers. That really opened up God's blessing.

Thank you Pastor for your devotion today. It was speking to me a lot about things in my family. I came across something last night that was letting me know how I should feel about what my siblings did to me. It said you are hurt but you forgive them deep down inside but can't be near them. Why? Because they're toxic and I don't need that in my life, my husband, or my children. I love them from a distance that's all I can do. Amen.

Love the story & because we can read the experience puts me there.  Recently a lot was stressing me out.  As I attempted to try and seek how this or that would be the answer.  One day recently reading scripture I realized that it was of my making.  God showed me to let go for He was in control.  I felt released.  Blessed to see this and be aware of it.  Peace returns is such a gift..a surprise gift from a Great Father. Trying to stay close.
