The Stranger At The Diner

  • Elijah said to her, Don't be afraid; go and do as you have said; but make me of it a little cake first, and bring it forth to me, and afterward make for you and for your son. For thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, The jar of meal shall not empty, neither shall the jar of oil fail, until the day that Yahweh sends rain on the earth. She went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, ate many days. 1 Kings 17:12 WEB

Once when a pastor / mentor of mine made his regular trip to the local diner to get food for his family, there was a strange man outside the diner dressed in ragged clothes. Now this was years ago in a small town in the country where everyone knew everyone else, Loris, South Carolina. Seeing strangers then was a rare sight. Pastor had never seen the man before, but when he got out of his car, the man asked him for money to buy something to eat with.

The pastor looked in his wallet and saw that he only had a twenty dollar bill, just enough to buy dinner for the family. As he started to close his wallet, he felt the Holy Spirit say, 'You have your checkbook with you. You could buy food with that.' So he pulled out the twenty dollars and gave it to the man.

He then went inside the diner to get his order and when the food was ready, he went to write them a check for it. The owner looked him over slowly and said: 'You're the one that pastors that church up there. There is no charge.'

The pastor thanked him and left. The next time that he visited the diner, it was the same thing: 'No charge.' That was now over twenty-five years ago and he and his family still eat there free every week. We have eaten there ourselves and the pastor is a dear friend of ours. The employees just wave them through the line. He does not even pull out his wallet anymore, just thanks them and takes the bag. He never saw the man in the ragged clothes again.

Hebrews 13:2 reads: 'Don't forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it.' I am not saying that this man was an angel, but apparently some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Abraham fed three strangers that came by his tent, and it turned out to be the Lord and two angels (Genesis 18:1).

Jesus told us: 'For whoever will give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you are Christ's, most assuredly I tell you, he will in no way lose his reward' (Mark 9:41).

Sometimes God sets up a little test for you. The widow in the opening verses had to make Elijah food first, who was to her just a stranger in need. Jesus said 'Give and it will be given to you.' Action is first required on our part, then there is a reward. Of course we do not have to give. That is our choice to make and if we choose not to, God will just choose someone else to receive what He was going to give us. God just may place a stranger in front of you in need to see what you will do.

Prayer: Heavenly Father help me see people as You see them. Give me discernment and speak to me clearly in a way that I understand You. Move on my heart and I will obey You, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Amen so true we sometimes entertain angels and we don't know.  That's why we need to be kind to each other.

My husband Jim knows when I say I will be right back with a Gospel of John in my hand that I am obeying the Lord. Abba gives me the opportunity to show my Jim , Christ in me. Abba has softened my Jim's heart so he doesn't ask questions or direct me to not go, he just waits patiently until I return. Sometimes Jim is the one who gives when he sees me looking at a homeless person, and then Jim gives them cash and one of my Gospels of John and says this is from my wife. It is such a blessing to give and as we give , Abba gives back blessing. It isn't always monetary, sometimes it is answered prayer.

Amen.Praise God for his faithfulness.Must share this.A short while ago I prayed for a prayer partner,to live near by where I live.Yerstuday We my husband and I gave a coupe a lift,as they were miles away from their destination.I was hoping to meet up with a Christian friend that morning,it was not meant to be.That evening my friend texted me.To say she had met a Christian couple who had moved to a place not far from me.,and was also keen to be with the two of us to start up a prayer group with us.My vision is bigger for a Fellowship to grow here,as it is so barren at the moment.Praise God for answered prayer,I am over joyed and filled with hope, and praying for a Revival here.Heavenly Father  lead and guide us as to were you want us to be..move our hearts in unity, that we will be one in you.In The Name of Jesus Christ I pray. Thank you Pastor.

This is so true! And all the angels I've met don't even resemble "angelic beings!" in their outward appearence!

Great Message! While we're so busy going to church we sometimes forget to be the church as we pass others by. Even a word of hope, or a smile, constitutes giving. This is a wonderful reminder to show hospitality to all people. Lord move our hearts to show compassion for all people, in Jesus name, Amen.

Great msg!  Charlie learned to take them to buy a meal & sit with them getting to know them.  I helped long back at a food & clothing ministry held once a week how great it all was.  I worked at prayer table.  This followed a church service,  receiving bags of food, clothing & prayer.  We all got to know them well.  As we got to know them in the city we also found some were selling the food for drugs.  When they were seen our pastor or another associate talked with them.  Working in the city for yrs I learned a lot from the Lord like discernment when the Lord would impress to do this or that.  God is soo good.  I loved those years.
