RHM is hosting a corporate (group) fast during the month of April. While we normally fast in private, I believe the Lord wants me to invite the Refreshing Hope members to participate with us in a community fast. We plan on doing a Daniel (vegan) fast, but if you have dietary or other restrictions, you can fast in whatever way your health allows. For more information, you can view the blog post here: https://www.refreshinghope.org/blogs/1/3013/intentional-growth

We are having delivery problems with aol.com and yahoo.com subscribers at the moment. Our emails bounce back us, so we can't even email you from here. I have contacted them through their site, but when you submit their crazy long form it goes to a blank white page. I will try again later. I am sorry if you can't receive the devotional using these services. We are working on it: https://senders.yahooinc.com/contact/#sender-support-request

The exhortation in the book of Hebrews to pay attention to Jesus and its warning to not drift away from God's truth is intensifying the urgency I feel in my heart. Personal study and prayer are critical for being prepared and ready for Jesus' return.

Merry CHRISTmas, Dion, Sylvia and all Refreshing Hope family,
I want to thank you for your devotions; I look forward to each one. I will admit that sometimes I don’t always read every devotion I receive (I’m usually on the go for appointments or what have you…and I don’t read them for being tired…..but, 99.9% I read them. Thank you for being so comforting when I needed it.
This is going to probably be a MAJOR long-shot, but I was wondering if it were possible to get some “financial assistance,” for my husband and I?
As you have previously been told, our checks are FULLY paid before we even get it. After bills are paid, we’re in the hole (sometimes by $30).
We are never invited to family gatherings. We never get to send Christmas cards, gifts to give or receive any. It’s been MANY years since either of us has received a gift. My sister bought us a board game roughly 2-3 years ago.
We have no family to go see or celebrate with. We’re lost and we’re hurting. We will be alone again on Christmas AND New Year’s.
We’re tired of being alone….but we’ve been doing it for more than 30 years.
If possible, would you please help?
In Christ’s Love,
Rachel Rosene

This is the first day after our thirty-day fast, and I thought I would note some things that have happened here so far. For the last week, possibly longer, we have been so drowsy and lethargic all day long. I have never had a period like this. It was misery. I could get a nap, go for a walk, take a shower, but then sit at the computer with my head bobbing. I could not shake it off. Trying to write something meaningful while trying to hold your eyes open is one of the worst things I have ever had to do. I would slap myself beside the face to try and shake it off at times to no avail.
This morning, the day after the fast, and without eating yet, that instantly cleared up, and my mind is sharp and clear. I can only believe that it was something spiritual we have been wrestling with, a deep sleep over the church of Christ. It is time to wake up from our nap and quite possibly what this fast was about.
On another note, I piddle in the stock market these days as a hobby and take the money we earn from working on computers on the side and invest it. Yesterday, on the last day of the fast, we had one position that rose over 310%. We purchased 50 shares of a stock (BTX - Brooklyn Immunotherapeutics) at an average cost of $12 per share. It rose to $52 and turned a $600 investment into $2,600 overnight. Praise the Lord, He doubled our monthly salary for April.
Now we look forward to a few days of feasting! This afternoon we plan to grind a New York Strip Steak into hamburger meat and mix in some bacon bits and blue cheese crumbles, then fire it up on the grill. Jesus said, "Man shall not live by bread alone," but it was included. So we plan to have some as well! Praise God. It is a great day to be alive. May the Lord richly reward you and cover you with His grace, mercy, protection, and provision. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen! less

I don't know if there is a "perfect" fast anyway - we all just do what we can, as He leads us, and as we can handle with our age, circumstances and health. For instance, one of the "better" fasts we did as far as getting a lot of nutrients was fresh juicing. We actually enjoyed it a lot, but really, we had to wrap our lives around it to make enough juice, because it would only be fresh for a short time. We were just not up to making it a lifestyle . less

There is hardly a perfect fast by imperfect people. The Lord understands and rewards our feeble attempts anyway! When you are trying at all, He will work with you and bless you with more. To him that has, more will be given. May you be blessed in every way!

The Lord often brings new direction, clarity, and better habits out of our fasts. Once, we were even laid off from work on the last week, but that started us down the path that led to Refreshing Hope. Once, we got a phone call inviting us to speak at Guideposts national conference on the final day of a fast. Several times He has made it clear that we were to step away from something and go in a new direction. There is nothing that brings the power of God into your life and a new direction like fasting does. That said, as you know by now, feasting is more fun than fasting! And Lord willing, tomorrow we plan to feast. less

It is time to start planning the break-fast menu. For us, meat will be back on the menu. We tend to watch a lot of cooking shows during fasting. I guess it gives us hope. We make plans for the future. Recently, we watched some of "America's Test Kitchen" episodes and learned a few interesting recipes. One is using a food processor to create fresh ground beef from a steak. Then you can craft a steak burger. While processing the meat, you can add in, well, anything you like. seasoning, bacon, cheese, onions, etc... That is what we are tentatively planning to do here for Saturday afternoon. Anyway, what are your plans? . less

God works through His people, and the enemy works through the people that he has a foothold in as well. They are ridden like horses into battle and do not even know what they are doing. It is amazing how much the enemy has in his file on us, and he knows just when we are the most vulnerable. If he can get us to let our shield down, then he can get a foothold in us as well. If you burn with intense anger for a while, then soon you will be hosting spirits of anger, a true “great minds think alike” moment. I have tried to focus more on creative work than physical work lately. Partly because it has been like combat, and secondly, I just don’t have as much physical strength as usual.
A key component of fasting is discipline. Teaching your body that you are the boss. Discipline is crucial to living a godly life. Paul wrote: (1 Corinthians 9:26–27 NASB) Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
I have met people struggling with drug addiction who said they wanted to go free. So I would teach them about fasting. One of them didn’t make it until noon the first day before eating. If you can’t control your appetite, it will always be challenging to live a balanced life.
Learn to build discipline and make your body listen to you instead of you to it. You are the boss, not your flesh. Good things are coming on the other side. And on May 1st, we are cooking something fun! It is time to start planning the menu. less

I hope this message finds you well. Aches, pains, drama, frustrations, things breaking are all a part of this. We are facing it here at Refreshing Hope as well.
We went out to buy some supplies yesterday and barely made it home, for our car began sputtering and dying randomly. Work is graceless, dry, and it is incredibly challenging to get anything done. Pretty much anything that can go wrong does.
Yet, behind the scenes, fasting is like hammering away at a large boulder blocking a path. Each strike of the hammer bounces off as if nothing happened. Until the final blow comes, and the boulder shatters. The road is clear.
That is what a breakthrough is like. Forces are dispatched to shore up the enemy's line, to discourage you and make you give up. Yet, you are closer than ever to bringing real change.
Yes, fasting is more than abstaining from something. It is a spiritual struggle against the dark forces oppressing your life. You have them by the throat, and they want to get free and for things to return to normal. That is why prayer is so important.
Stay the course. See it to the end. We will breakthrough. We will come out of the wilderness in the power of the Spirit, free from the things that bind us. less

That is the area I'm being challenged in; I've fasted in times past, and realize how essential prayer and intercessory prayer goes hand in hand with the fasting. Pray that I awaken even earlier in the morning to get that time in. I'm an educator, and I get up at 4:30 to 4:45 a.m. during the weekday to prepare for work. I need to get up at 4 a.m. to at least get 30 minutes of uninterrupted time in prayer. Thanks in advance for checking in on us. I would like to share with the family my devotional that I typed up this morning for my family and friends; I think it would encourage us all:
Good morning Family and Friends, Here's my devotional reading for you today:
As we begin this week, I want to let you know that life can and will present some painful moments. Just know that it's "Temporary", and with time, focus, determination, and Faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, it will subside and pass.
Success, Achievement, and Victory comes with pain and suffering; you can't have one without the other. So don't be fearful, be resilient, steadfast, and unmovable; God will see you through, as you seek Him for what you're trying to succeed in.

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:58 (KJV)
"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord." less

Fasting ignites our prayers, but if we fail to pray then we miss out on a lot of the benefits of the fast. Also the Word, things begin to leap out at you that you never noticed before. But again, if you don't listen to it or read, then you miss out on that as well.

Desiderio, please do check with your doctor to be sure that the way you are fasting is working ok with your diabetes - there are many ways to fast . Praying that He heals the diabetes and shines His presence on you through your fast !

Have Thine own way! Thou art the potter, I am the clay, mold me and make me after Thy will , while I am waiting, yielded and still! . . . " I believe He is working on me like a broken vessel and reshaping me, also working on me in regards to complete surrender to His will, thinking of the song "I surrender all, I surrender all, all to Jesus I surrender . . . " as I'm constantly praying & turning it all over to Him, only to take it back again! I have a long way to go! Also, meditating on Jeremiah 18:3-4! less

My time spent with my brothers and sisters here at RHM whether fasting, praying or praising has made me hungry to know more about our Lord. This April time the Lord is showing me things that need to be cleansed from my heart. I can really be a stinker and I am so very grateful our Father is forgiving, kind and will always love us, even when we fail. less

The first 7 days from meat wasn't so hard. This past few days from sweets has been more difficult. But still I feel I'm not doing "enough" is the feeling.. The Lord has laid on my heart some shortcomings and unforgiveness I continue to carry. I am working on my heart and spirit. I am grateful for this time to seek Him and His will for my life. less

When you (or at least we ) have meat, it stays in the system longer, so we feel full longer. That's actually probably not great, 'cause it's just sitting in our system . Dion, in particular, was not feeling well yesterday afternoon because we hadn't had time to get breakfast. It's just one of the challenges, but well worth it! less
