Glow Plugs

Glow plugs help ignite the fuel in a diesel engine. They are especially useful for cold starts, for starting the engine is very difficult without them. They provide extra heat, and soon, the engine is running on its own without the help of the glow plug.

(Proverbs 27:17 NASB)  Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another.

When you have been separated from the body of Christ for an extended time or even in a cold, legalistic religious environment, you need a little extra heat to get started again—someone spiritually warm, accepting, understanding: a spiritual glow plug.

I learned a funny thing about heat in an HVAC class: Only heat transfers. When you pick up a cold glass, you feel it because heat is being transferred out of you and into the glass. Air conditioners work not by bringing in cold air but by transferring heat outside until the temperature drops inside.

Cold does not transfer. Cold is merely the absence of heat, as darkness is the absence of light. But oh yes, you can feel cold because it is sucking the remaining heat out of you until you reach equilibrium. You become equal in temperature. You become like they are.

We touch those around us, and if you allow the Lord to use you, He will turn you into a spiritual glow plug. So many have stalled, grown cold, and need a glow plug to get started again. You will find glow plugs all through Scripture, those who help others get started: Barnabas mentored Paul, and then Paul mentored Timothy. Not to mention the fire that started it, which spread from Jesus to the Apostles and down through the centuries.

(Psalm 104:4 NKJV)  Who makes His angels spirits, His ministers a flame of fire.

Christians are like embers in a fireplace. If you take one out and sit it alone or in a bed of ice, the fire inside will die out. But if you place it back in the heat with the other embers, it will soon catch fire again. We need each other. I can encourage you when you are down, but I need you to encourage me when I am down.

When Elijah the prophet reached a low point and was hiding in a cave from Ahab and Jezebel, the Lord told him to anoint three people. One of them was to become his successor, Elisha. It is a wonderful story to reflect on.

The Prophet Elijah had been through such a struggle during a time when the worship of baal was the religion of Queen Jezebel and was being heavily promoted by her. She was killing off the prophets of the Lord. After Elijah had a showdown with about 900 of her pagan priests, called down fire from heaven, and had them put to death, Jezebel sought to kill him, so he had to flee for his life.

(1 Kings 19:1–3 NKJV)  And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time." And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

(1 Kings 19:4 NKJV)  But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, "It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!"

It had been years of struggle, and the Prophet Elijah had had enough. He needed encouragement, and the Lord had already picked someone to help him, a farmer, who didn't even know it yet. An angel appeared and brought Elijah some food and water. Then, he traveled forty days to Mount Horeb, where he met with the Lord. The Lord told him to anoint three people: Hazael, who would become King of Syria; Jehu, who would become King of Israel; and Elisha, who would become his replacement. They would wipe out baal worship in Israel. So he went to find Elisha.

(1 Kings 19:19–20 NKJV)  So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle on him. And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah...

In ten seconds, Elisha went from a hard-working farmer to an assistant prophet. He became Elijah's companion for the next 6-10 years. He traveled with Elijah, poured water over his hands, carried his things, learned from him, and later inherited his mantle and a double portion of his anointing.

Elijah was the glow plug that got Elisha started, and after he was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elisha continued to run without him. Though Elijah had raised the dead and called down fire from heaven, his servant Elisha went on to perform twice as many miracles, including fire and multiple resurrections. His ministry was also twice as long. Elijah was a prophet for about twenty-five years and Elisha for sixty.

There are many others, and some even glowed externally: Moses' face glowed so brightly that he had to wear a veil because people were scared of him (Exodus 34:30). Stephen's face became like the face of an angel (Acts 6:15). On the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus's face was bright as the sun (Matthew 17:2).

Let Him use you to ignite the fire in others.

You can pray this with me if you like:

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You so much for this day! Please stir up my spirit and make me a fire for You. Open up the right doors for me. Put the people you want me to reach in my path, and Your words in my heart. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
