No one knows 'who' it was but someone asked Jesus a question.
"Lord, are there 'Few' that will be Saved?" Luke 13:23
Jesus was making His way towards Jerusalem to accomplish what only the Lamb of God Who came for the purpose of taking away the Sin of the World, could accomplish.
Listen to His Answer. It declares the necessity of what YOU and I 'must do' in order to 'inherit salvation'.
"STRIVE to Enter at the Straight Gate. For there will be Many who will seek to Enter In and will NOT be able."
Jesus did not say this to turn us away ... but He spoke this to show us that we must be dedicated in our advance towards He and His kingdom. And that we must take this journey Seriously! 'STRIVE'!
'Strive to Enter!' The Greek Word is ἀγωνίζομαι ... 'agōnizomai' (ag-o-nid'-zom-ahee). And it means several things.
1] To Struggle or to Compete for a Prize.
2] To Contend with an Adversary.
3] To Endeavor to Accomplish a Task. (unyielding to compromise)
4] To Fight, Labor Fervently ... to Strive!
You can see here where our English Word 'agonize' came from. And yes we are to agonize if necessary, in order to Enter this Straight Gate'. We must count all things as 'Loss' to achieve this Race of Faith.
Now, don't use this to say within yourself 'There is no use even trying!' That would be so hypocritical of you. I believe that YOU would do ANYTHING for your children. How could you think to do LESS to achieve the right to Enter the Kingdom of God for yourself? This IS the Pearl of Great Price!
And ... One More Thing ...
Some will say: "Listen, my sister or brother ... Jesus paid the Full Price for my entrance into His kingdom. There is NOTHING that I can do, or ... NEED TO DO!" To which I must answer: "Remember WHO it is WHO says that YOU and I must STRIVE to Enter His Kingdom ... and then tell me that there is 'nothing' you must do!"
Again ... His sobering words for the Sober Minded: " ... Many will seek to Enter In and shall NOT be able."
The Strait Gate ... How very necessary it is to understand what Jesus means by way of this 'Gate'. Forgive me for giving you a lesson in Greek but it is vitally important that I do so here. You must 'see' what Jesus means.
The Greek Word is στενός, stenos ... sten-os'. And it's meaning is:
2] ... as in an Obstacle Course.
The 'Straight' Gate is first of all 'The Narrow Gate'. But it is not only Narrow it is also blocked by 'obstacles standing here and there and close about'.
Every Individual must endeavor to Enter through this Gate. But to do so He or She must face the Obstacles that are in the Path to this Gate.
For some it is Lust. (in all of its' perversions)
For others, it is a need to have more 'Stuff'.
Still others - the need for 'comfort'.
The need for the approval of people.
The Strong Drive for Achievement and for Great Riches.
Popularity (at any cost).
These are but a few of the Obstacles that Block the Path of one who 'seeks to enter'. And there is a LONG list of 'Good Things' that can keep a Man or a Woman from 'Entering' as well. Many are lost by seeking Good as well as those lost by seeking Evil.
Jesus said: "If a Man loves his own life, or that of his Wife, Children, Father, Mother, etc., more than Me, He is not worthy of Me."
To Some that may seem as a case of 'Divine Ego' ... but it is Wisdom. For WHAT He alone can offer ... cannot be compared to any achievement one could gain in this life. And ... NOTHING in this Life compares to the Value of a Man's Soul ...
Please Remember ... That the Race is NOT to the Swift ... Neither is the Battle to the Mighty. If YOU and I are 'yoked in Christ' we can make this Journey together.
"Fear not little flock for it is Your Fathers' good pleasure to give YOU the Kingdom of Heaven!"
COUNT ALL THINGS LOSS!
ENDURE THE 'OBSTACLE COURSE!'
