Man On The Run

Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, 'So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I don't make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time!' When he saw that, he arose, and ran for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree. Then he requested for himself that he might die, and said, 'It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.' 1 Kings 19:1 WEB

Just yesterday, Elijah was a man to be reckoned with. He had called down fire from heaven and defeated hundreds of false prophets at Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:38). He had prayed for rain and broken a three year drought (1 Kings 18:42). He had even outrun a horse on foot!

Today though, he was a man on the run, fleeing for his life from that rotten Jezebel. One of the greatest prophets of the Bible was now scared, alone, depressed, and praying to die, even after he had seen so many powerful miracles in his life. Elijah was tired, burnt out, and he did not want to continue on. He prayed to end it. The Lord understood and told him to anoint Elisha, who would be his successor. He then took Elijah home in a whirlwind.

If you do anything meaningful for God, there will be resistance. Sometimes the greatest successes in life are followed by purely utter failure. There is a backlash that often follows a breakthrough. Do not be alarmed if things suddenly go wrong after a major victory, for this to will pass.

You can win this fight just as you did the last one, but you need to stand your ground and stay in the battle. When you fall, get back up. Don't get down and depressed and start praying for God to just end it all. If you do, He may just listen.

Prayer: Heavenly Father I thank You for all that You do for me. Please strengthen me and confirm Your words to me. Let me know that I am in the right place, doing the right things. Help me recognize when You are speaking to me. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray.
