Special Update: The Day the Lights Went Out in Conway

  • Special Update: The Day the Lights Went Out in Conway

    Hello everyone,

Thank you for being a part of Refreshing Hope Ministries. As you may have noticed, over the last few days the devotional stopped coming, and the website was down. This was because Hurricane Matthew passed directly over our town. The storm caused massive flooding, downed power lines, broken utility poles and severe wind damage.

Flooding at a Local High School
    Conway High School flooded

It started raining heavily here about 24 hours before the winds actually arrived and that softened the ground so that when the wind started to blow, the trees just toppled over roots and all. The winds were 75mph with gusts much higher at our home. Not long after it began, the power went out. We had prayed about it, and I knew that we were going to be ok. Still the winds howling, the house shuddering, and pieces of our neighbors roofing and siding blowing by the windows made us pray some more. It was at least eight long hours before the storm subsided, and the strongest winds came oddly at the end of it.

Sunday morning was calm when we went outside to check the damage. Thank God, at our home we only lost some fencing, underpinning, boxing and the edge of our metal roof had began to lift. Sylvia and I worked together and repaired it all on Monday. 70% of Horry County was still without power and they restore the cities first. We live in the country and the estimate for us was up to two weeks.

    Hurricane Matthew at Myrtle Beach

Not wanting our deep freezer to thaw out, we started checking around for a generator. We soon found that the roads were flooded out, or blocked by downed trees, and none of the traffic lights were working. We dragged all the limbs out of our driveway and went exploring. We could not go to Conway as the river had crossed the road, and we could not go to Loris as a section of the highway had washed out. We eventually found a generator in Myrtle Beach at Sam’s Club. I guess everyone had the same idea, when we stopped by Lowes for a gas can, there were at least 5 people with generators in the check out line and the shelves were becoming empty.

We headed back home and started up the generator with the fuel that we had. When we went out to get some more, we found there were no gas stations open, anywhere in a 25 mile radius. None of them had power either. Those that were open just had thrown the doors open and were selling things, cash only.

We figured that we could at least get our servers back online, but then found that all of the Internet, Cable, and telephones were down in the area as well. So there was no bringing up Refreshing Hope until the utilities were restored.

The neighbor's carport behind the fence was turned on its side!
    Hurricane Matthew Fence Work

Verizon sent us a text message that because of the hurricane, we had unlimited data, texts, and voice calls for the week which was a blessing. We used our phone’s internet to keep up on Facebook (you may wish to “like” our page for future emergencies) and Sylvia and I spent the evenings watching laptop movies by candlelight.

Our mornings were spent scrounging more fuel for the generator to keep the deep freezer going. When we stopped at the local Wal-Mart, the food shelves were empty like an apocalypse had happened. Thankfully we had food at home and have a gas grill so were still able to cook. All in all, we lived a very blessed life, other than the extremely cold showers.

One wonderful thing about the storm was that we got to see our community at its best. There was no looting that we could see, and all the people we met were friendly and supportive of each other. Line workers gathered from neighboring regions and are still working tireless to get everyone back up and running. There is nothing like adversity to bond people together.

    Storm Roof

Fortunately, the power came back on at our house after three days and the Internet soon after. For many in the area, it is still off. It was a bit like stepping back in time and it is good to see Refreshing Hope back online!

God is GREAT. Once I saw no devotional I knew you were hit by Matthew and were without power. I imdediately started praying for you guys. I have prayed since Mathew made landfall in Hatti. I have family in Florida and a few of them only had some minor damage as well. It is great knowing all is well with you and Sylvia. Have a fantastic day. God bless you both and continue to keep you safe.

We always read in the Bible that God is faithful.  The story of your situation proves that God is still with us.

Praise God that things were not worst than they were/are and that you are recovering.

I wait each day to read your devotional and am thankful for your insights and inspiration.

JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD is the light in the dark.  HE was with you Pastor and Sylvia and the rest of all those affected by the huricane.  Here in Alberta, Canada we do have the news in general about the South and North Carolina being really battered by the huricane.  You were on my prayers when I have not received the RHM devotional.  I knew then that you are on the path of huricane Mathew.  But GOD IS GOOD AND HE LOVES HIS CHILDREN AND PEOPLE VERY MUCH..  You are back and thank you and praise THE LORD OUR GOD.

I am so glad that you and your family survived Hurrican Matthew!  That was quite a storm and I prayed for all who were affected by this massive storm and also my prayers are for those who lost loved ones.  May God safely carry those lost to his heavenly home and may they find joy and peace with our Father in Heaven and with Jesus Our Savior.  May God continue to Bless you and all who have come through the storm.

Proverbs 24:10 says "If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small." Times of trouble can be useful. The can show you who you relly are, what kind of character you  have developed in Christ. In addition, they can help you grow stronger. When Jeremiah questioned God because of the trouble he faced, God asked how he ever expected to face big challenges if the little ones tired him out (Jeremiah 12:5). We cannot complain about our problems and should never complain about our problems. The trouble Pastor Todd you and Sylvia faced is training you in more difficult situations you will face in the future. It is of no surprise as we are daily put to the test. We never know when the next huge one is going to hit, but we have to always be prepared in the face of adversity, trusting an all knowing God who is sufficient. I am so blessed to be part of the warrior spirit in both of you. I thank God for all our trials and for those who do not bow dow or break in such trials. You are a blessing to me and I am thankful to God for both of you. Thank you for sharing your pictures. My love and blessings as we walk this walk together. Shalom.

The picture of your local HS flooded is something. The water almost reached the crossbar which is 10 feet high! Not sure why so much water there, but it is certainly a blessing to see pastor Dion standing on dry land fixing the fence :-)

Haha, agreed, Albert! Though Dion was an avid fisherman in his day, I'm sure it is better in a boat ;-). I'm not sure why it was so flooded either, but it was certainly torrential for many hours, and many of the streets are still flooded now!

I really missed your daily devotionals, but I was in the path of Hurricane Matthew as well here in Bunswick, GA. I also prayed and stayed. The flooding came up within five inches of entering my doorway and the cars almost flooded, but God sent the water miraculously draining just in time! My prayers are with those who were hit harder. School is closed here until next week. So glad you are safe in Conway!

Our family serves in China full time caring for the orphans here.  My husband and I are faithful followers of your daily devotionals. Most websites of a religious nature are blocked here by gov't firewalls, but God has allowed your links to the devotions to always go through for two years now.  When they stopped coming in last week we thought for sure the firewalls had finally succeeded.  So we visited your website and saw the news of what had taken place.  While are are certainly happy that everyone is safe, we shamefully must confess we're doing the Snoopy dance here in China that their firewalls are still being defeated by His divine intervention.

Blessings from the Bennett's in China

Hi all,

just letting you know that God spared my Wife and I during this catastrophy. I live in Port orange florida and my trailer park looks like a war zone. No flooding but the wind damage is hard to describe. I lost half of my car port and part of my trailer but nothing I can't fix.  My best neighbor next door has already has his trailer condemned and he doesn't know where he is going to live . Amazing that the two God fearing people in my neighboor hood, who prayed hard before the storm ,where spared major damage. God is good. I have a hard time rejoicing over my good fortune however when all these good people I know had their homes destroyed.

I live in Savannah, Georgia. It is by God's grace that we are all safe and sound. My dog went a little nuts from the howling of the wing. We got lots of rain too. I live in the country and power just came back on Wednesday, October 11.  My children and their families are all safe as well. Tybee Island took a beating and Fort Pulaski was surrounded by water and the people that stayed on the island were trapped because the road was covered in water. We had a12.5ft storm surge. The rivers arecstill creating as we speak. My son in law is a lineman for the powe company. He has been working such long hours trying to get power back to people.

God took care of all those I love.  Couldn't ask for a better blessing.
